WOMEN'S SOCCER VOTED FIFTH IN ECC PRESEASON CENSUS
CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (Aug. 31, 2011) - The Molloy College women's soccer squad has been pegged to finish fifth in the 2011 East Coast Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, as released by the league on Wednesday. The Lions, who finished last season at 6-10-1 overall and 4-3 in ECC play, look to make their second-consecutive trip to the conference tournament after being eliminated in a 5-1 semifinal loss against this year's favorite, C.W. Post.
Narrowly edging University of Bridgeport by one poll point, the Pioneers accumulated 56 points and a pair of first-place nods for tops in the league tally. Meanwhile, the Purple Knights had a poll-best four first-place votes, and got 55 points in the process. Dowling College and Queens College were also separated by a one-point margin in third, and fourth place, respectively. The Golden Lions collected 42 points, with the Knights sporting a subsequent total of 41 points and a first-place tab.
Molloy checked in with a fifth-place register of 31 points. Mercy College (29 points) followed in sixth. NYIT (19 points) and St. Thomas Aquinas College (15 points) rounded out the ledger. The Spartans also received the final first-place vote, despite being selected to come in last.
Head Coach Danny Longo and the Lions kick off the 2011 campaign against Merrimack College as part of the Dowling College Tournament in Brookhaven, N.Y. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
