Box Score vs. Felician - October 8, 2009
ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Oct. 8, 2009) - The Molloy College volleyball team defeated Felician College in four sets on Thursday night at Quealy Gymnasium in Rockville Centre, N.Y. The scores of the sets were 25-23, 25-13, 21-25 and 25-18. With the win, the Lions improved to 7-14 overall, while the Golden Falcons fell to 3-14. Freshman outside hitter Liz Nugent (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) came off the bench to tally seven kills in the match, which helped Molloy to a season sweep of Felician.
The first set was a back-and-forth battle where the score was tied on four different occasions. The largest lead in the set was five points, accomplished by Felician at 14-9 and 16-11. At 16-11, Molloy went on a 6-1 run to knot the score at 17-17, forcing a Golden Falcons timeout. Following the intermission, both sides exchanged points to once again draw even at 18-all.
The Lions then rattled off three straight points off a kill from freshman middle hitter Liz Moulder (Wantagh, N.Y.), a service ace from senior setter Kristen Sklarsky (Wantagh, N.Y.) and an attack error from sophomore opposite Megan Delamater (Paramus, N.J.). Delamater later committed a key service error at 23-22, which gave Molloy a two-point lead. They put the set away on one of sophomore right-side hitter Angelica Nicalek's (Valley Stream, N.Y.) game-high 18 kills.
The second set began with the Lions jumping out to an 8-3 lead as Nugent recorded the kill that gave Molloy the five-point cushion. Their lead grew to nine points, as a ball handling error courtesy of junior middle blocker Sam Ament (Little Falls, N.J.) gave MC the 15-6 advantage.
Felician would get as close as four points at 15-11, but the Lions extended the lead back to ten (22-12) with an attack error from freshman outside hitter Jenna Matesic (Paramus, N.J.). Sophomore middle hitter Catherine Russini (Westbury, N.Y.) put the set away with one her game high three service aces.
The third set saw the Golden Eagles take an 11-6 lead early on as junior outside hitter Amber Doran (Little Ferry, N.J.) recorded the kill that gave the Golden Falcons the five-point edge. Molloy fought back to tie the score at 19-19 off of a Doran attack error. Felician then scored six of the next eight points to capture the set.
The final set began as a microcosm of the first set, where both teams won points back-and-forth until the score was leveled at 4-4. Nugent gave the Lions a brief 5-4 lead with a kill. The score would then be tied four more times until a kill from junior outside hitter Arielle Wichard (Merrick, N.Y.) gave Molloy a lead they never relinquished at 9-8. A Nicalek kill at 23-16 gave Molloy their largest lead of the set until Russini's kill finished off the match.
Head Coach Kevin Quiambao and the Lions return to action this Tuesday when they continue their East Coast Conference schedule against New York Institute of Technology at Quealy Gymnasium in Rockville Centre, N.Y.
