Box Score vs. Dowling - October 29, 2009
ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Oct. 29, 2009) - On Thursday, the Molloy College volleyball team lost its fourth-consecutive contest as it fell to East Coast Conference nemesis Dowling College, 3-0 (17-25, 19-25, 10-25), at Quealy Gymnasium in Rockville Centre, N.Y. With the defeat, the Lions dropped to 8-18 overall. They are also 3-8 versus league foes. As for the Golden Lions, they are now at 24-5 and 10-1 in the ECC. Freshman setter Jennifer Koelbel (West Hempstead, N.Y.) paced Molloy in the defeat with 18 assists, three digs and two kills.
The two teams exchanged points early in the first set until an ace from freshman outside hitter Janae Giles (Sandy, Utah) gave Dowling a 13-7 lead and forced the Lions to call a timeout. Following the respite, Molloy went on an 8-2 run to tie the score at 15-up as freshman middle hitter Liz Moulder (Wantagh, N.Y.) registered three kills in that stretch. With the score even, Dowling took command of the set, and notched 10 of the next 12 points to take the opening frame 25-17.
The second set saw the Golden Lions jump out to a lead similarly to the first as a kill from senior outside hitter Patrycja Klekotka (Siedlic, Poland) put Dowling in the lead 7-4. The Lions' deficit grew to four as they fell behind 12-8 before a pair of kills from sophomore right-side hitter Angelica Nicalek (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and an ace from Koelbel helped the Lions level the battle at 13-all. Molloy never took the lead again for the remainder of the set and the Golden Lions owned the second frame 25-19.
The third stanza saw the two combatants trade points to bring the score to 5-5 at which point Dowling went on a 6-1 run to force a Molloy timeout at 11-6. Following the break, the trouble continued as the Golden Lions built an insurmountable 10-point lead at 18-8. With command of the match fully in hand, Dowling ran off seven of the next nine points to finish the sweep with a 25-10 result in its favor.
Head Coach Kevin Quiambao and the Lions now travel to Waterbury, Conn. to compete in a tri-match at Post University on Halloween with the Rams of Philadelphia University and the host Eagles. Molloy opens with Philadelphia and the first serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
