Box Score vs. Caldwell - November 3, 2009
ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Nov. 3, 2009) - On Tuesday evening, the Molloy College volleyball team lost its last home match of the 2009-10 campaign to Caldwell College by a final score of 3-0 (20-25, 16-25, 13-25) at Quealy Gymnasium in Rockville Centre, N.Y. With the victory, the Cougars improved to 19-11 on the season. Caldwell also extended its winning streak to eight straight. As for the Lions, they fell to an overall record of 9-21. Molloy has also dropped six of its last seven decisions.
The first set saw the Cougars come out of the gate quick. With two early service aces from sophomore setter Lauren Roth (Findlay, Ohio), the visitors jumped out to a 5-1 lead. The Lions began to claw back after a service ace from senior libero Monika Rodziewicz (Lindenhurst, N.Y.), which made it 11-6 in favor of the Cougars. Molloy then went on a 3-0 streak via kills by sophomore middle hitter Catherine Russini (Westbury, N.Y.) and junior outside hitter Meaghan Meyer (East Meadow, N.Y.). However, it was not enough in the end as the Cougars put together a 4-1 burst to bring the score to 22-18. Caldwell junior outside hitter Cory Roesing (Secaucus, N.J.) recorded the kill to end the first set.
The start of the second set remained fairly close between the two squads. The Cougars went on a 4-0 spurt, which saw two service aces from sophomore outside hitter Elise Lennon (Secaucus, N.J.) making the score 7-3. Molloy then responded with three unanswered points. Freshman defensive specialist Stefani Koelbel (West Hempstead, N.Y.) had a pair of service aces in the run. However, the Cougars put the set away with eight straight points with the help of two service aces from freshman libero Maddy Amon (Shelbyville, Ky.) bringing Caldwell's lead to 17-8. The guests won the set on an ace by Roth.
The final set was the quickest of the match seeing Caldwell put together a 5-0 run early on. With Roesing serving later on in the set, freshman outside hitter Susan McDonough (Saline, Mich.) smashed two kills to help string together a 4-0 stretch for the Cougars making the score 13-4. The set, and the match, was sealed up when Caldwell reeled off eight unanswered points, which included two straight service aces from McDonough, giving the Cougars a 22-10 advantage.
For Molloy, Rodziewicz, who was honored earlier in the evening in Senior Day festivities, finished with 12 digs bringing her all-time school record to 1,236. Junior setter Kristen Sklarsky (Wantagh, N.Y.) recorded a team-high 13 assists, while sophomore right-side hitter Angelica Nicalek (Valley Stream, N.Y.) posted 10 kills. As for Caldwell, Roth recorded a match-high 27 assists, while McDonough had 14 digs. Roesing put down a match-best 11 kills.
Head Coach Kevin Quiambao and the Lions close out the regular season this Thursday when they travel to Old Westbury, N.Y. to battle East Coast Conference foe New York Institute of Technology. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
