ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY- Senior Angela Barra (East Meadow, NY) notched 12 kills during the Molloy College volleyball victory over the Cougars of Caldwell College on October 9 at Quealy Gymnasium. The 3-1 non-conference win improves the Lady Lions overall record to 8-11, while the Cougars drop to 1-18.
Molloy struggled in game one as they fell, 30-28. However, the Lady Lions did not lose focus and jumped to a 9-4 advantage in game two. Back-to-back errors by Caldwell allowed Molloy to take a nine point lead (17-8) and the Lady Lions did not look back as they took game two, 30-22.
The Lady Lions fell behind in game three, 11-2 but Molloy fought back and an ace by freshman Arielle Wichard (Merrick, NY) gave the Lady Lions a one point lead (21-20). Caldwell tied the game at 25, but two consecutive aces by freshman Laura Haynes (Garden City, NY) gave Molloy the two point edge (27-25) and would seal the victory for Molloy (30-26). The Lady Lions opened game four with an 8-0 run and held their distance from the Cougars as they took game four, 30-22.
Defensively, the Lady Lions were led by sophomore Monika Rodziewicz (Gdansk, Poland) who had 18 digs and senior Diann Drury (Bellmore, NY) contributed 11 digs. Wichard and Haynes each finished the game with eight kills. Senior Danielle Sekesan (Hicksville, NY) passed out 18 assists, while freshman Kara Kerley (Wantagh, NY) added 16 assists.
The Lady Lions will travel to Goldey-Beacom College on October 12 for a 7:00 PM non-conference game.
