WOMEN’S TENNIS TOPS DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, 9-0; TO MAKE FIRST ECC TOURNAMENT APPEARANCE

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Oct. 4, 2009) - On Sunday afternoon, the Molloy College women's tennis team welcomed in East Coast Conference newcomer University of the District of Columbia with a 9-0 result for the Lions at the Rock Creek Tennis Center in Washington, D.C. The Lions have now improved to 3-6 overall and 2-3 in league play. They also clinched a spot in the ECC Tournament for the first time in program history. As for the Firebirds, they went to an overall and league record of 0-5.

Molloy won all three doubles decisions by scores of 8-0. In the first position, freshmen Caitlin Ortiz (Huntington Station, N.Y.) and Jeana Frey (Island Park, N.Y.) beat Danielle Smith and Andrea Thomas. During the second flight, senior Shannon Skeggs (Southold, N.Y.) and rookie Madeline Jurlano (Middle Village, N.Y.) defeated Lisa Cohen and Shakira Watford. At third doubles, senior Annie Ayala (South Hempstead, N.Y.) and sophomore Alex Bonventre (West Babylon, N.Y.) upended Chantel Henry and Callister Jones.

The Lions kicked off singles action with a trio of straight-set 6-0, 6-0 wins. Frey tripped up Cohen at first singles. Smith went down to Jurlano at No. 2 singles, while Bonventre upended Thomas in the third flight. Ayala battled Watford to a 6-2, 6-3 victory at fourth singles. In the No. 5 position, junior Amanda Colquhoun (Floral Park, N.Y.) blanked Henry, 6-0, 6-0. Lastly, in the sixth flight, freshman Brigid Damm (Levittown, N.Y.) defeated Jones in her collegiate debut by a 6-0, 6-0 count.

Head Coach Terry Hirten and his squad return to action this Wednesday when fourth-seeded Molloy heads to Flushing, N.Y. for an East Coast Conference Tournament semifinal match-up with top-seeded Queens College. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. During the regular season, the Lions lost to the Knights by a 9-0 score on September 30.
