BALDWIN, N.Y. (Oct. 2, 2009) – On Friday, the Molloy College women’s tennis team capped off its home slate for the 2009 campaign with a 6-3 victory against East Coast Conference nemesis St. Thomas Aquinas College at Baldwin Park in Baldwin, N.Y. The Lions have now gone to 2-6 overall and 1-3 when taking on league foes. They also snapped a losing streak of six straight matches.
Junior Danielle Bicknell (Nanuet, N.Y.) and
senior Alison Reeg (Stony Point, N.Y.) opened
things up for STAC (4-4, 1-4 ECC) with an 8-4 besting of freshmen
Caitlin Ortiz (Huntington Station, N.Y.) and
Jeana Frey (Island Park, N.Y.) at No. 1 doubles.
Senior Shannon Skeggs (Southold, N.Y.) and
freshman Madeline Jurlano (Middle Village, N.Y.)
then answered with an 8-4 win of their own at No. 2 doubles. At
third doubles, senior Annie Ayala (South Hempstead,
N.Y.) and sophomore Alex Bonventre (West Babylon,
N.Y.) won 8-3.
Frey bounced back from doubles with a straight-set (6-3, 6-2)
victory against Reeg at No. 1 singles. During the second flight,
sophomore Kristen Schimpf (Washington Township,
N.J.) beat sophomore Angeline Asaro (Deer Park,
N.Y.) by a 6-2, 6-0 count. Molloy then went on to claim
the next three singles decisions to put the contest away for good.
Jurlano bested Bicknell at the third position, 7-6, 6-2. Bonventre
won a 7-5, 6-2 decision over sophomore Christine Patruno
(New York, N.Y.) at No. 4 singles, while Ayala got a
three-set win at the fifth flight.
Head Coach Terry Hirten and the Lions return to the court this
Sunday when they travel down Interstate-95 to Washington, D.C. for
a matinee match-up versus East Coast Conference newcomer University
of the District of Columbia. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
