WOMEN’S TENNIS DROPS TO QUEENS IN ECC TOURNEY SEMIFINAL, 7-0

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Oct. 8, 2009) - On Wednesday afternoon, the fourth-seeded Molloy College women's tennis squad fell by a final score of 7-0 to top-seeded Queens College in the semifinals of the East Coast Conference Tournament at the Queens Tennis Courts in Flushing, N.Y. Freshman and All-ECC first-team selection Jeana Frey (Island Park, N.Y.) won two games against senior Somadi Drucker (Capetown, South Africa), but it wasn't enough as the Lions lost in their first-ever ECC post-season appearance.

In No. 1 doubles, Drucker and freshman Erika Goldsmith (Edison, N.J.) bested Frey and freshman Madeline Jurlano (Middle Village, N.Y.) by an 8-0 decision. The same was true for juniors Maria Mendes (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Laura Mocodeanu (Hyde Park, N.Y.) in the second position. The tandem beat senior Shannon Skeggs (Southold, N.Y.) and freshman Caitlin Ortiz (Huntington Station, N.Y.). At the third flight, senior Annie Ayala (South Hempstead, N.Y.) and sophomore Alex Bonventre (West Babylon, N.Y.) fell 8-1.

Although Frey and Drucker never settled their contest at first singles, Goldsmith downed Jurlano in the second position, 6-1, 6-0. At No. 3 singles, Mendes blanked sophomore Angeline Asaro (Deer Park, N.Y.) by counts of 6-0. In the fourth flight, another match went unfinished. This one between sophomore Taylor Barber (Salt Lake City, Utah) and Bonventre. In the No. 5 spot, Ayala lost to rookie Daniela Celi (Orlando, Fla.) by 6-0 scores. Lastly, at sixth singles, junior Amanda Colquhoun (Floral Park, N.Y.) fell by the same decision.

Head Coach Terry Hirten and his squad return to the court tomorrow when Molloy squares off against Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Caldwell College. First serve is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
