Box Score vs. Queens - September 30, 2009
FLUSHING, N.Y. (Sept. 30, 2009) - On Wednesday afternoon, the Molloy College women's tennis team was beat by 2008 East Coast Conference Tournament runner-up Queens College, 9-0, in Flushing, N.Y. The Lions now own an overall record of 1-5 and a league mark of 0-3. They have also lost their previous five contests. As for the Knights, they went to 9-0 and 5-0 versus ECC foes. Freshman Jeana Frey (Island Park, N.Y.) played a three-set bout with senior Somadi Drucker (Capetown, South Africa) at first singles, but lost, 7-5, 6-7, 8-10.
In No. 1 doubles, Drucker and freshman Erika Goldsmith (Edison, N.J.) won by an 8-1 score against Frey and rookie Caitlin Ortiz (Huntington Station, N.Y.). Sophomore Angeline Asaro (Deer Park, N.Y.) and freshman Madeline Jurlano (Middle Village, N.Y.) were then made quick work of in an 8-0 loss at second doubles with juniors Maria Mendes (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Laura Mocodeanu (Hyde Park, N.Y.). Sophomore Alex Bonventre (West Babylon, N.Y.) and senior Annie Ayala (South Hempstead, N.Y.) lost 8-3 at No. 3.
Following Frey's loss in the opening position, Jurlano got just three games off of Goldsmith in a 6-2, 6-1 defeat at second singles. At No. 3 singles, sophomore Taylor Barber (Salt Lake City, Utah) beat Asaro by identical 6-0 counts. In fourth singles, Ortiz dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision to rookie Daniela Celi (Orlando, Fla.). Junior Maria Perevezentseva (Moscow, Russia) bested Ayala in the No. 5 slot, 6-0, 6-1. Lastly, at sixth singles, Colquhoun suffered a 6-1, 6-0 loss to junior Kirby Reiss (Rockville Centre, N.Y.).
Head Coach Terry Hirten and his squad return to the court this Friday when Molloy closes out the home part of its schedule against St. Thomas Aquinas College at Baldwin Park in Baldwin, N.Y. First serve is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
