WOMENS TENNIS GETS EDGED BY GEORGIAN COURT, 6-3

LAKEWOOD, N.J. (Sept. 26, 2009) –
Deadlocked at 3-up in the contest, Georgian Court University
claimed the next three singles matches to defeat the Molloy College
women’s tennis team by a 6-3 decision at the Ellen Mullane
Gallagher Tennis Center on Saturday in Lakewood, N.J. The Lions,
who went to 1-3 overall with the defeat, were paced by freshman
Madeline Jurlano (Middle Village, N.Y.). In the
third singles position, Jurlano beat junior Natalie Grieci
(Point Pleasant, N.J.) in three sets by scores of 4-6,
6-1, and 6-1.
At No. 1 doubles, Grieci and junior Brittany Aimone (Toms
River, N.J.) registered a 9-7 win over senior
Annie Ayala (South Hempstead, N.Y.) and sophomore
Alex Bonventre (West Babylon, N.Y.). The hosts
came out victorious by the same decision at second doubles. It came
by the tandem of senior Caitlyn Lawrence (Toms River,
N.J.) and sophomore Alexus McClintic (Toms River,
N.J.). At the No. 3 position, Jurlano and senior
Shannon Skeggs (Southold, N.Y.) picked up a
decisive 8-4 win.
In No. 1 singles, Aimone beat sophomore Angeline Asaro
(Deer Park, N.Y.) in straight sets, (6-0, 6-1). Molloy
responded by winning the next two contests. Freshman Jeana
Frey (Island Park, N.Y.) and Jurlano recorded victories at
second and third singles, respectively. At the fourth position,
freshman Caitlin Ortiz (Huntington Station, N.Y.)
fell to Lawrence by identical 6-1 counts. Bonventre lost 6-3, 6-1
to McClintic at No. 5 singles. Lastly, at sixth singles, Ayala lost
to sophomore Sarah Lockenmeyer (Point Pleasant,
N.J.) in three sets.
Head Coach Terry Hirten and the Lions return to the court this
Monday when they square off with East Coast Conference opponent St.
Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill, N.Y. The opening serve is
slated for 3:30 p.m.
