WOMEN’S TENNIS COMES UP SHORT AGAINST C.W. POST, 5-4

BALDWIN, N.Y. (Sept. 29, 2009) - Senior Annie Ayala (South Hempstead, N.Y.) notched victories in singles and doubles play on Tuesday, but it did not get the job done as the Molloy College women's tennis team fell to East Coast Conference opponent C.W. Post by a 5-4 decision at Baldwin Park in Baldwin, N.Y. With the result, the Lions fell to 1-4 and 0-2 in league action. On the other hand, the Pioneers improved to an overall record of 3-4 and an ECC mark of 3-2.

The team of freshmen Jeana Frey (Island Park, N.Y.) and Caitlin Ortiz (Huntington Station, N.Y.) fell in the first doubles position against junior Morgan Milleisen (Bayport, N.Y.) and freshman Katie Avelar (Woodbury, N.Y.) by a score of 8-2. At No. 2 doubles, freshman Madeline Jurlano (Middle Village, N.Y.)  and senior Shannon Skeggs (Southold, N.Y.) were edged out by junior Aysylu Mardanova (Moscow, Russia) and graduate Rosemary Marrugo (Freeport, N.Y.), 8-5.

In third doubles, Ayala and sophomore Alex Bonventre (West Babylon, N.Y.) redeemed the team with a 8-2 win over the combination of junior Chloe Przonek (Old Brookville, N.Y.) and freshman Erin Lawney (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.).

In singles play, Milleisen beat Frey in straight sets by a 6-2, 6-4 score. The second flight saw the Lions' Jurlano defeat Maradanova, 6-3, 6-1. Sophomore Angeline Asaro (Deer Park, N.Y.) lost to Marrugo by identical 6-0 marks at third singles. The fourth position match saw Avelar defeat Ortiz in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. Ayala picked up her second win of the day from the fifth spot by beating Przonek 8-6, 6-3. The final singles flight saw junior Amanda Colquhoun (Floral Park, N.Y.) edge junior Kristen Hetiler (East Rockaway, N.Y.) in three sets by marks of 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.

Head Coach Terry Hirten and the Lions return to action tomorrow as they travel to nearby Flushing, N.Y. for an ECC match against Queens College. First serve is slated for 3:30 p.m.
