WOMEN’S SOCCER OPENS 2009 ECC SLATE WITH 4-0 SHUTOUT OF STAC

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Sept. 30, 2009) - Senior midfielder Jessica Molina (Bayside Hills, N.Y.) earned two goals and one assist on Wednesday evening as the Molloy College women's soccer team defeated East Coast Conference foe St. Thomas Aquinas College, 4-0, at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex in Rockville Centre, N.Y. The two tallies were Molina's first of the season. With the win, the Lions improved to 3-5 on the year, and 1-0 in league play. As for the Spartans, they fell to 3-7 with an ECC ledger of 0-3.

The Bayside Hills native put the Lions on the scoreboard when she scored her first goal of the game off a cross from freshman midfielder Kaitlynn Kelly (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) in the 14th-minute. Ten minutes later, Molina found the back of the net again as she fired a shot that deflected off a defender and into the goal.

The two teams went into halftime with Molloy ahead 2-0. In the 69th-minute, Kelly tallied her first collegiate marker as Molina fed her a cross-pass that was punched into the right corner of the net. With 1:30 remaining in regulation, junior midfielder Lynn Scattaglia (Flushing, N.Y.) tipped a ball into the left corner for her first goal of the season. Junior midfielder Dianna Geneva (Hicksville, N.Y.) was credited with the assist on the play.

Spartans' senior goalkeeper Jeanette Gibson (Stony Point, N.Y.) recorded one save, while Lions' senior netminder Paula Sanelli (Medford, N.Y.) registered her first shutout of the season. Kelly finished with six shots, while Molina had four. Sophomore forward Tori Matt (Chenango Forks, N.Y.) attempted two shots for St. Thomas Aquinas. As a team, Molloy had the edge in corner kicks (2-1) and shots (17-6).

Head Coach Danny Longo and the Lions return to action tomorrow when they travel to Waterbury, Conn. to face the Eagles of Post University. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
