BALANCED OFFENSE LEADS WOMEN’S SOCCER PAST MERCY, 4-1

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Oct. 3, 2009) – The Molloy College women’s soccer team received markers from four different players on Saturday as the Lions downed the Mavericks of Mercy College by a 4-1 decision in an East Coast Conference clash at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex in Rockville Centre, N.Y. With the result, the Lions improved to 4-6 overall and 2-0 in league play. Junior midfielder Lynn Scattaglia (Flushing, N.Y.) led the way for the hosts with three points on a goal and an assist.

The Lions, who owned a 19-6 advantage in shots, kicked off the scoring with 24:28 elapsed in the first half on a goal by rookie midfielder Kaitlynn Kelly (Rockville Centre, N.Y.). On the tally, she broke from the middle, and sent a 15-yarder into the lower-right corner of the goal. One minute later, Scattaglia found the mesh as she hit a ball from the top of the box into the upper left 90. As the next 19-plus minutes fell off of the clock, the hosts went into the break up by a score of 2-0.

Four minutes into the second half, freshman forward Nicole Valentine (Massapequa, N.Y.) notched her team-leading fourth goal of the season to put the hosts up by a trey. Scattaglia was credited with the assist. In the 76th-minute, junior forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, N.Y.) got Mercy (1-5, 0-2 ECC) on the board. She went on a break from the right side, and kicked an 18-yard shot into the top-left corner of the goal. Four minutes later, senior forward Paula Sanelli (Medford, N.Y.) capped the scoring for Molloy on a shot from 15 yards out.

Between the pipes, senior keeper Christina Aquilon (Whitestone, N.Y.) didn’t make a save for the Lions, but was saddled with the victory in the contest. As for the Mavericks, senior goalie Samantha DeVore (Norwich, Conn.) knocked down a game-high six shots. In addition to the shot margin, Molloy sported an 8-3 edge in corner kicks. Valentine led all players with six shots (four SOG).

Head Coach Danny Longo and the Lions return to action this Wednesday when they close out their two-game homestand in Rockville Centre, N.Y. against ECC foe C.W. Post.
