WOMENS SOCCER FALLS TO DOWLING IN DOUBLE-OVERTIME HEARTBREAKER, 2-1

BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. (Oct. 21, 2009) - On Wednesday evening, the Molloy College women's soccer team lost in the 102nd-minute of action as Dowling College senior forward Vanessa Moreira (Selden, N.Y.) kicked a rebound in the rear of the net for her second tally of the game, which handed the Golden Lions a 2-1 double-overtime victory at Golden Lions Field in Brookhaven, N.Y. With the win, Dowling improved to 11-3-1 on the year and 5-1 in the East Coast Conference. As for Molloy, it went to 5-9 and 3-3 against league opposition.
The game remained scoreless until the 82nd-minute when Molloy freshman forward Nicole Valentine (Massapequa, N.Y.) lobbed a shot over the head of Dowling junior goalkeeper Alicia Commisso (Floral Park, N.Y.) from 25 yards out. Just three minutes later, Moreira recorded her first tally of the contest as she punched the ball from five yards out into the top left corner of the mesh. Senior defender Brianna Falese (Centereach, N.Y.) was credited with the assist.
With the score knotted at one and regulation over, the two squads went into the first overtime session. After ten minutes elapsed and no markers scored, a second extra period was needed. Two minutes into the second overtime, Moreira scored off a rebound from graduate midfielder Kate Collins (North Caldwell, N.J.) to seal Dowling's victory.
In net for Molloy, graduate goalie Christina Aquilon (Whitestone, N.Y.) had a game-high nine saves. As for Dowling, Commisso stopped two shots on the night. Moreira paced all players with 12 shots for the Golden Lions, while junior midfielder Dianna Geneva (Hicksville, N.Y.) fired a team-high two shots for the Lions.
Head Coach Danny Longo and his squad return to action this Saturday when Molloy travels to Nyack, N.Y. to lock up with Nyack College. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
