WOMEN’S SOCCER UPSETS NO. 12 BRIDGEPORT IN DOUBLE-OVERTIME THRILLER, 3-2

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Oct. 17, 2009) - Senior defender Kate-Lynn Muir (Westbury, N.Y.) notched the game-winning goal in the 102nd-minute for the Molloy College women's soccer team to push the Lions past the 12th-ranked Purple Knights of University of Bridgeport in double overtime by a 3-2 decision on Saturday at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex in Rockville Centre, N.Y. On the play, Muir kicked a 35-yarder into the lower left corner of the netting on an unassisted effort.

The Lions (5-8, 3-2 ECC) opened up the scoring with 36:22 elapsed when freshman forward Nicole Valentine (Massapequa, N.Y.) headed in her fifth marker of the year off of a corner kick from freshman defender Sarah Brennan (Islip Terrace, N.Y.). That goal also proved to be the lone of the stanza. In the 53rd-minute, UB got the tally back to tie the contest at 1-up. Junior midfielder Elin Svavarsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland) placed a three-yarder beyond Molloy graduate keeper Christina Aquilon (Whitestone, N.Y.).

Later on, in the 73rd-minute, senior forward Paula Sanelli (Medford, N.Y.) gave the Lions back the lead with a shot into the bottom right corner of the netting off a through ball from Valentine. Six minutes after, UB (11-1-3, 3-1 ECC) drew the game even again with an unassisted score by freshman midfielder/defender Leah Gallie (Palmerston North, New Zealand) - her fifth of the year. Aquilon made a game-high nine saves, while Bridgeport junior keeper Emelie Karstrom (Everod, Sweden) turned aside five shots.

Overall, Bridgeport owned a 24-12 advantage in shots and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Valentine took a team-best four shots. Sanelli attempted three shots for the Lions. As for the Purple Knights, senior forward Sofia Hoflin (Ostersund, Sweden) had a game-high six shots - three of which were on net.

Head Coach Danny Longo and his squad return to action this Wednesday when Molloy heads to Brookhaven, N.Y. to take on East Coast Conference rival Dowling College. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
