ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Nov. 1, 2008) - Senior defender/midfielder Joanna Taylor (Seaford, N.Y.) tallied the game-winning goal in the 101st-minute on Saturday to push the Molloy College women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Queens College in its regular-season finale at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex in Rockville Centre, N.Y.
On the play, Taylor received a pass off of a through ball from sophomore midfielder Dianna Geneva (Hicksville, N.Y.). She then cut through two defenders to give herself a breakaway. After that, Taylor put a shot from eight yards away inside the left post, which was her team-leading fifth goal of the 2008 campaign, to get the Lions the win.
Prior to the contest and the announcement of the starting lineups, Molloy said goodbye to its eight seniors. In addition to Taylor, they were Corene Norniella (Garden City, N.Y.), Megan Carlson (Levittown, N.Y.), Kristina Peros (Manhasset, N.Y.), Kristyn O'Brien (Valley Stream, N.Y.), Gillian Fortune (Westbury, N.Y.), Christina Aquilon (Queens, N.Y.) and Kristie Caruso (Whitestone, N.Y.).
For the Lions (8-7-2, 5-4 ECC), Taylor led all players with four shots. Fortune contributed three shots - two of which were on goal. Geneva and freshman forward Tove Naslund (Nykoping, Sweden) took two shots apiece. Caruso and junior midfielder/forward Jessica Molina (Queens, N.Y.) had a shot each for Molloy, which held a 16-8 advantage in shots and a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
For the Knights (12-6, 4-5 ECC), junior forward/midfielder Jennifer Robbins (Louisville, Ky.) and sophomore midfielder Laura D'Amore (Bayside, N.Y.) notched a team-high two shots. Freshman goalkeeper Crystal Butler (Howell, N.J.) and Aquilon made a game-high five saves for their respective squads.
This game wraps up the regular season portion of its schedule. Although they did not clinch a spot in the East Coast Conference Tournament, the Lions will now await word on a possible bid to the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Division II Championship. The bracket is scheduled to be released on Monday, November 10.
