PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Nov. 15, 2008) - Senior midfielder/forward Brianna Renford (Gilbertsville, Pa.) tallied the game-winning goal for the top-seeded Philadelphia University women's soccer squad in the 80th-minute to tally a 1-0 win over No. 3 seed Molloy College in the 2008 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Division II Championship game on Saturday at Finnesey Field on the campus of St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia, Pa.
For the Rams (12-7-4), sophomore midfielder/forward Sara Redka (Williamsport, Pa.) took a game-high four shots. Junior midfielder Jillian Sokolski (Philadelphia, Pa.) posted three shots. Renford, sophomore midfielder/forward Natalie Vespe (Acto, N.J.) and freshman defender Lisa Lungaro (Stony Point, N.Y.) notched two shots each. As for the Lions (9-8-2), senior midfielder Kristie Caruso (Whitestone, N.Y.) attempted the lone shot for the team.
Molloy senior goalkeeper Christina Aquilon (Queens, N.Y.) knocked down a game-high eight shots. Senior netminder Sara Hall (Newark, Del.) made one save for Philadelphia. The Rams also held a 16-1 advantage in shots and 3-0 edge in corner kicks.
The Lions finished the 2008 campaign with an overall record of 9-8-2 and an East Coast Conference mark of 5-4. Statistically, senior defender/midfielder Joanna Taylor (Seaford, N.Y.) headed up Molloy in scoring with 11 points off five tallies and one assist. Sophomore midfielder Charlotte Laurie (Huntington, N.Y.) and senior forward Gillian Fortune (Westbury, N.Y.) were tied for second with eight points (2 G, 4 A). In net, Aquilon owned a ledger of 9-6-2 with 88 saves and a goals-against average of 0.77.
