ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Oct. 22, 2008) - In her first start of the season, junior keeper Paula Sanelli (Longwood, N.Y.) made a game-high 10 saves as the Molloy College women's soccer team lost to the New York Institute of Technology by a 2-1 decision in overtime on Wednesday at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex in Rockville Centre, N.Y.
The game-winner was recorded in the 96th-minute by sophomore midfielder Taylor Jensen (East Meadow, N.Y.). On the play, she entered the box and received a cross from freshman midfielder Megan Emanuelo (Deer Park, N.Y.). Jensen was then one-on-one with Sanelli. She proceeded to strike a ball into the lower left corner of the netting to get the Bears (7-7, 3-4 ECC) the victory.
In the first stanza, which saw no scoring, freshman forward Tove Naslund (Nykoping, Sweden) attempted two shots for Molloy (6-6-2, 4-3 ECC) - both of which were on goal. Senior midfielder Mallory Dickman (St. James, N.Y.) and sophomore midfielder Charlotte Laurie (Huntington, N.Y.) posted a shot on goal each. Sophomore forward Jennifer Roveto (Plainview, N.Y.) had a shot as well.
Just over a minute into the second half, the Lions got on the board first with a score from Naslund. She kicked a 15-yard shot from the top of the penalty box over the head of NYIT rookie netminder Kathryn Miller (Doylestown, Pa.). The assist was tabbed to senior midfielder Kristie Caruso (Whitestone, N.Y.) - her second for 2008.
Six minutes later, Emanuelo knotted the contest up at 1-all with a shot into the lower left corner of the goal off a through ball from senior defender Marisa Maltese (Massapequa, N.Y.). Emanuelo continued her strong rookie campaign on the night as she amassed three points (1 G, 1 A) with eight shots, which led all players.
Jensen added five shots (three SOG) for the Bears, which held a 22-9 advantage in shots. It also owned a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Freshman midfielder Jenna D'Alessandro (West Hempstead, N.Y.), sophomore midfielder Stephanie Bradbury (Merrick, N.Y.) and junior midfielder Marisa Maltese (Massapequa, N.Y.) totaled two shots apiece.
For the Lions, Naslund earned a team-high four shots. Dickman picked up a pair of shots. Laurie, Roveto and senior defender/midfielder Joanna Taylor (Seaford, N.Y.) credited one shot to their names.
Head Coach Danny Longo and his squad return to action this Saturday when they continue to try and clinch a playoff berth in the ECC Tournament at Long Island University - C.W. Post Campus, which is ranked third in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division II poll. The opening kick is scheduled for noon.
