COLCHESTER, Vt. (Aug. 29, 2008) - Sophomore midfielder Charlotte Laurie (Huntington, N.Y.) tallied an unassisted goal in the 89th-minute for the Molloy College women's soccer team on Friday, but it fell 3-1 to Merrimack College in its 2008 season opener at the DoubleTree Kickoff Classic. The tournament was hosted by St. Michael's College at Doc Jacobs Field in Colchester, Vt.
After one half of scoreless play, the Warriors notched two goals in a six-minute span to grab hold of a 2-0 lead. Junior forward Gabrielle Gramprey (Brockton, Mass.) and sophomore forward Carissa Gildea (Enfield, Conn.) scored at the 62nd- and 68th-minute, respectively. Both tallies came off passes from senior forward Nikki Abruzzese (Morris Plains, N.J.).
Shortly thereafter, freshman forward Kara Hennigan (Pawtucket, R.I.) added another goal to the Merrimack side of the scoreboard when she punched one past the diving senior goalkeeper Christina Aquilon (Queens, N.Y.) for a 3-0 advantage with 4:40 to go. Three minutes later, Laurie got Molloy (0-1) going with her unassisted tally.
Senior goaltender Shannon Rowan (Fair Haven, N.J.) did not make a save for the Warriors (1-0), who owned an 18-3 margin in shots and a 9-2 edge in corner kicks. Aquilon knocked down a game-high 11 shots for the Lions.
