DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 16, 2008) - Senior midfielder Kristie Caruso (Whitestone, N.Y.) collected a game-high two goals on Thursday afternoon as the Molloy College women's soccer team earned its second victory in a row with a 3-0 blanking of Mercy College at the Mercy Soccer Field in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. With the decision, the Lions improved to 6-5-1 overall and 4-2 in East Coast Conference play. As for the Mavericks, they fell to 1-5-2 and 0-4-2 against league opposition.
Molloy opened up the scoring in the 17th-minute when Caruso struck a corner kick into the goal for the lone tally of the first half. Seconds into the latter stanza, senior goaltender/forward Paula Sanelli (Longwood, N.Y.) gave the Lions a 2-0 advantage when she picked up her first marker of the year from a shot inside the box off a pass from the right corner by senior forward Gillian Fortune (Westbury, N.Y.). The assist was Fortune's team-leading fourth of the season.
In the 59th-minute, the two prior goal scorers teamed up to close the door on Mercy. Caruso received a Sanelli pass from the left corner. She then put a ball past the hands of Mavericks' freshman goalkeeper Jackie Roebuck (Walden, N.Y.), who made a game-high four saves on the afternoon. Senior netminder Christina Aquilon (Queens, N.Y.) stopped three shots for the Lions, who held a 12-9 advantage in shots and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
Sanelli headed up all players with five shots - three of which were on net. Sophomore midfielder Charlotte Laurie (Huntington, N.Y.) finished with three shots. Caruso had two shots. Freshman forward Tove Naslund (Nykoping, Sweden) and freshman forward/midfielder Jacqueline Harris (Copiague, N.Y.) added one shot apiece for Molloy.
On the Mercy side of the ball, sophomore forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, N.Y.) took a team-leading three shots. Sophomore forward Damima Bakayoko (New York, N.Y.) chipped in with two shots. Sophomore defender Stephanie Bann (New Cumberland, Pa.), freshman forward Arlene Broderick (Yonkers, N.Y.) and freshman defender Dana Harjus (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) recorded one shot each.
Head Coach Danny Longo and the Lions return to action this Saturday when they wrap up their five-game road trip at Georgian Court University. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
