PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Oct. 27, 2008) - Senior midfielder/forward Kristyn O'Brien (Valley Stream, N.Y.) notched her first two goals of the 2008 campaign on Monday afternoon to push the Molloy College women's soccer squad to a 3-0 win against Chestnut Hill College at the CHC Soccer Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
After a scoreless first half, the Lions (7-7-2) drew first blood 28 seconds into the latter stanza as junior midfielder/forward Jessica Molina (Queens, N.Y.) kicked a shot past Griffins' sophomore goaltender Caitlin Lafferty (Landenberg, Pa.) to grab hold of a 1-0 lead. Sophomore midfielder Lynn Scattaglia (Flushing, N.Y.) was credited with the assist on the play.
Neither team would reach the scoreboard after that for another 35-plus minutes. But, in the 81st-minute, the Lions added on an insurance tally when O'Brien recorded her first of two goals on the day with a score from the wing off a feed from senior midfielder Mallory Dickman (St. James, N.Y.). Eight minutes later, O'Brien picked up her second marker on an unassisted effort.
Lafferty knocked down a game-high 12 shots for Chestnut Hill (5-13), while senior goalkeeper Christina Aquilon (Queens, N.Y.) made three saves for Molloy. The Lions also owned a massive advantage in shots (40-5). As for the Griffins, they held a 2-1 edge in the corner kick department.
Senior defender/midfielder Joanna Taylor (Seaford, N.Y.) and senior midfielder Kristie Caruso (Whitestone, N.Y.) attempted a game-high six shots each. O'Brien registered five shots. Molina, junior netminder/forward Paula Sanelli (Longwood, N.Y.) and freshman midfielder Kathleen Keegan (Queens, N.Y.) added four shots apiece for Molloy.
As for Chestnut Hill, junior forward Julie Treen (Upper Township, N.J.) collected two shots. Junior midfielder Jackie Nevius (Mullica Township, N.J.), sophomore midfielder Tara Morey (Pittsgrove, N.J.) and sophomore forward Lauren Riiff (Clementon, N.J.) had one shot each.
Head Coach Danny Longo and the Lions will return to the field this Saturday when they close out the regular season at home against East Coast Conference opponent Queens College. They will also pay homage to their graduating class as Molloy will celebrate "Senior Day". Action is scheduled to get underway from the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex at noon.
