ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Sept. 15, 2008) - Senior forward Gillian Fortune (Westbury, N.Y.) totaled three points off a goal and an assist in her 2008 season debut on Monday night as the Molloy College women's soccer team handed Caldwell College its fifth-straight loss with a 2-0 victory at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex in Rockville Centre, N.Y. With the win, the Lions have now won two in a row to run their record to 2-2 overall.
Fortune's goal in the 58th-minute shut the door on the Cougars (0-5) as she punched a loose ball into the lower left corner of the goal to give Molloy a 2-0 lead. Senior defender/midfielder Joanna Taylor (Seaford, N.Y.) opened up the scoring in the 19th-minute when she put a shot in the top-left netting off a short cross from Fortune. Taylor also attempted a game-high five shots for the Lions - four of which were on goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Hoenig (Howell, N.J.) turned aside a game-high 10 shots for Caldwell, while senior goaltender Christina Aquilon (Queens, N.Y.) earned a second-consecutive shutout after making four saves and not yielding a tally for Molloy. The Lions also owned a 19-6 advantage in shots, while both squads had six corner kicks apiece.
Head Coach Danny Longo and his team return to action this Wednesday when they begin a three-game road trip in Bridgeport, Conn. against the University of Bridgeport. The game will also be the East Coast Conference opener for both squads. In addition, the Lions and Purple Knights are going to try to continue their winning ways as Molloy will look to make it three straight, while Bridgeport is going for its sixth victory in a row. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
