WOMEN’S SOCCER WINS THIRD STRAIGHT AFTER 1-0 OVERTIME THRILLER AT BRIDGEPORT

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Sept. 17, 2008) - Freshman forward Tove Naslund (Nykoping, Sweden) recorded the game-winning tally one minute into the first overtime period to get the Molloy College women's soccer team its third-consecutive victory on Wednesday night with a 1-0 decision over the University of Bridgeport in the East Coast Conference opener for both squads at Knights' Field in Bridgeport, Conn.

On the play, Naslund found a loose ball during a scramble in front of the net and knocked it into the top-right corner of the goal. Senior forward Gillian Fortune (Westbury, N.Y.) scored a point in her second-straight contest as she was credited with the assist. She now has four points (1G, 2A) in the two matches she has appeared in. Moreover, Fortune took a team-high two shots for the Lions (3-2, 1-0 ECC).

The Purple Knights (5-1-1, 0-1 ECC), who had its five-game winning streak snapped in the loss, owned a 22-7 advantage in shots and a 9-3 margin in corner kicks. Junior forward Sofia Hoflin (Ostersund, Sweden) and freshman Katie Stanley (Oxon, England) each attempted a game-high seven shots. Sophomore Ceri Harris (Bury St. Edmunds, Wales) totaled three shots.

Molloy senior goalkeeper Christina Aquilon (Queens, N.Y.) made six saves. Junior netminder Elina Yletyinen (Lulea, Sweden) knocked down two shots for Bridgeport, which came into this evening's contest ranked fourth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas East Region poll. Aquilon also posted her third shutout in a row for the Lions.

Head Coach Danny Longo and his squad return to action this Monday when they travel to Waterbury, Conn. to take on Post University. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
