MANCHESTER, N.H. (Mar. 15, 2009) –
Southern New Hampshire University used a 13-goal streak in the
first half on Sunday afternoon to beat the Molloy College
women’s lacrosse team by a final score of 19-3 at Larkin
Field in Manchester, N.H. Senior attacker Maura Murphy
(Candia, N.H) and senior midfielder Libby Parent
(Hinesburg, Vt.) anchored the effort with three goals
apiece. Junior attacker Carole Lee (Derry, N.H.)
and freshman midfielder Emily Mongeau (Westborough,
Mass.) added two goals each in the run.
The Penmen (2-2) got things moving by tallying five unanswered
goals to start the game. Sophomore attacker Sherry Darrell
(Bow, N.H.) opened the scoring with an unassisted marker.
Murphy followed with two goals – one from the free position,
and the other coming off of a feed from senior attacker
Jennifer Parro (Ipswich, Mass.). Lee accounted for
dishing assists on the next two goals, which were to Mongeau and
Parro at the 23:28 and 21:16 marks, respectively.
The Lions (1-0) got on the board two minutes later when junior
attacker Lori Sollitto (Wantagh, N.Y.) scored from
inside the eight-meter line. That tally was answered with a
six-goal spurt by SNHU over an eight-minute stretch. It gave the
Penmen an 11-1 lead with 9:26 remaining. Parent began and ended the
run with a goal. Parro picked up her second and third assists of
the contest. Mongeau and Lee struck for tallies as well on
unassisted efforts.
The half closed with each team finding the back of the cage twice.
Nonetheless, SNHU remained ahead by a 10-goal margin at 13-3
heading into the locker room. Freshman midfielder Emily
Antonette (Seaford, N.Y.) and senior midfielder
Kristin Lang (Hicksville, N.Y.) notched tallies
for Molloy. Parent and senior attacker Laura Rotolo
(Waltham, Mass.) registered markers for Southern New
Hampshire.
Six minutes into the latter stanza, the Penmen picked up from where
they left off with two quick scores over a two-minute stint to grab
a 15-3 advantage with 21:47 left. Rotolo and Parent were
responsible for the scoring. Both tallies came on an assist from
Parro. Junior attacker Rebecca LaFlare (Lindenhurst,
N.Y.) tried to get things rolling for the Lions at the
18:58 juncture with a goal, but it was to no avail as SNHU
responded with three unanswered markers to put the game away for
good.
In addition to two goals, LaFlare finished with five shots, three
draw controls and one caused turnover. Senior attacker Erin
Brady (Long Beach, N.Y.) passed out two assists. She also
won ground ball. Senior defender Tristan Gastiaburo
(Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and Antonette earned two ground balls
and one caused turnover. Freshman attacker/midfielder Gina
Sepe (Deer Park, N.Y.) had two draws and one ground ball.
Senior goaltender Alicia Frisch (Lindenhurst,
N.Y.) made a game-high eight saves for Molloy.
For SNHU, Parro amassed seven points on one goal and six assists.
She also registered two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Lee,
Parent and Murphy notched four points apiece. Parent also took six
shots, while Murphy and Lee had five shots each. Graduate
midfielder Lucretia Joy (Portland, Maine) compiled
three points (1 G, 2 A). She also added two draw controls, one
ground ball and one caused turnover. Rotolo, Darrell and Mongeau
tallied two goals apiece. Mongeau also raked in six draws, five
shots (four SOG) and three ground balls.
Overall, the Penmen held a 37-19 advantage in shots and a 22-17
edge in ground balls. Both teams won 13 draw controls each. SNHU
also had a great day with clearing attempts as it converted
successfully on 17-of-18 (94.4 percent). Molloy was good on 52.9
percent (9-of-17) of its clears. In the free position, the Lions
were 1-for-2 (50.0 percent), while the Penmen scored on 33.3
percent (1-for-3) of its chances inside the eight-meter line.
Head Coach Tom Campolettano and his squad return to the field this
Saturday when Molloy continues its six-game homestand in
Philadelphia, Pa. at Holy Family University. Tip-off is slated for
1 p.m.
