ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Apr. 10, 2009) - Junior attacker Rebecca LaFlare (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) scored a game-high five goals on Friday afternoon to send the Molloy College women's lacrosse team past Philadelphia University by a 17-9 score at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex in Rockville Centre, N.Y. She also collected eight shots and one draw control, while senior goaltender Alicia Frisch (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) made 12 saves between the pipes to snap a three-game losing streak for the Lions.
Knotted at 1-1 with just over 18 minutes to go in the first half, Molloy (5-6) scattered three unanswered markers over a three-minute stretch to take a 4-1 lead with 15:21 left. Freshman midfielder Emily Antonette (Seaford, N.Y.) got things going with a free-position tally. LaFlare scored the last two tallies in the streak. Nine minutes later, the Lions still sported a three-goal margin at 6-3 until Philadelphia (5-6) freshman midfielder Caribeth Shappell (Reinholds, Pa.) found the back of the cage from inside eight-meters at the 6:30 mark.
The Lions answered immediately with three consecutive scores to cap off the half, which put them in the locker room up by a score of 9-4. Junior attacker Lori Sollitto (Wantagh, N.Y.), who posted five points (2 G, 3 A) on the day, recorded back-to-back unassisted goals in a two-minute interval. Senior attacker Erin Brady (Long Beach, N.Y.) finished off the period with a marker on a feed from freshman attacker/midfielder Gina Sepe (Deer Park, N.Y.). LaFlare picked up from where she left off in the latter stanza with two straight tallies, which got Molloy an 11-4 upper hand in the match. The respective assists came from Sollitto and sophomore midfielder Hayley Lacey (Levittown, N.Y.). At the 21:19 mark, the Rams took one back on an unassisted goal by freshman attacker Taylor Peltzer (Holland, Pa.). But, Molloy responded by accumulating three of the next four goals in the contest to put any chance of a rally to bed.
Antonette, freshman midfielder Alison Scalice (Plainedge, N.Y.) and junior midfielder Kristie Sosnowski (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) all contributed in the effort. Junior midfielder Kerianne Steine (Franklin Square, N.Y.) added a goal as well towards the finish. Sosnowski closed out her afternoon presence with another big afternoon. She raked nine shots, eight ground balls and six draws in addition to two tallies. Antonette notched three draw controls and three points (2 G, 1 A) for Molloy.
As for Philadelphia, senior attacker Sarah Davis (Dublin, Ohio) closed out with a hat trick. She also won three ground balls. Peltzer totaled seven draws, two goals and one caused turnover. Shappell raked in three ground balls, two goals and a pair of caused turnovers. Sophomore midfielder Danielle Coffaro (Webster, N.Y.) had one goal as well as four ground balls, two draw controls and one caused turnover.
