LAFLARE RECORDS THREE GOALS AS WOMEN’S LACROSSE LOSES TO NO. 10 NEW HAVEN, 19-8

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (Apr. 19, 2009) – Junior attacker Rebecca LaFlare (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) checked in with a hat trick on Sunday, but it wasn’t enough as the Molloy College women’s lacrosse team fell by a 19-8 score to 10th-ranked University of New Haven at Kayo Field in West Haven, Conn. With the defeat, the Lions snapped a two-game winning streak, and fell to an overall record of 6-7. As for the Chargers, they ran their winning streak to three games, and improved to 12-3 on the year.

Scoreless just a few minutes in, New Haven tallied five unanswered goals in a four-minute stint. Senior attacker Brigid Brady (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) anchored the effort with two tallies – one of which came in the free position, while the other was unassisted. Molloy answered by posting two of the next three scores. That diminished the deficit to four (6-2). Senior midfielder Kristin Lang (Hicksville, N.Y.) and LaFlare accounted for the scoring. While LaFlare closed out the day with three goals, Lang chipped in with a tally and an assist.

After that, the Chargers got both those scores back and more as they notched three goals in a period of 3:59 to grab hold of a 9-2 advantage. Brady got her 38th and 39th scores of the season. Sophomore midfielder Ashley Ferrandiz (West Sayville, N.Y.) picked up the other on an assist from freshman midfielder Aubrey Duncan (Patchogue, N.Y.). Following an unassisted goal by Lions’ freshman attacker/midfielder Gina Sepe (Deer Park, N.Y.), New Haven tallied four consecutive markers to take its largest lead at 13-3.

Freshman attacker Alexis Gabbe (Malverne, N.Y.) recorded two goals in the streak. Senior midfielder Mallory Ferrandiz (West Sayville, N.Y.) notched a marker within eight meters and an assist. Senior attacker Brianna Kenworthy (Holden, Mass.) posted the other goal. The Chargers eventually went into the break with a 13-4 lead after Lions’ sophomore midfielder Kristie Sosnowski (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) found the back of the cage on a feed from Lang.

New Haven picked up from where it left off in the second half as the Chargers got in four of the first five scores. Ashley Ferrandiz notched back-to-back goals. Mallory Ferrandiz continued with an unassisted marker. Gabbe finished the streak with a tally from the free position. The last scoring for Molloy came with three consecutive goals to bring the shortfall down to 17-8 with 6:27 left. LaFlare, junior midfielder Kerianne Steine (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and sophomore attacker Maria Varricchio (Massapequa, N.Y.) all struck the cage netting.

Sosnowski finished with seven draw controls, three ground balls, two caused turnovers and one marker. Lang raked five ground balls and one caused turnover. Freshman midfielder Emily Antonette (Seaford, N.Y.) got five ground balls and four caused turnovers for the Lions, who recorded an 87.5 (14-of-16) clear percentage and was successful on 2-of-4 (50.0 percent) free position attempts.

For the Chargers, Ashley Ferrandiz collected a game-high six points (5 G, 1 A). She also amassed four draw controls, three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Brady collected five goals with eight shots (seven SOG). Mallory Ferrandiz (2 G, 2 A) and Kenworth (3 G, 1 A) totaled four points apiece. Kenworth also posted five draws, two ground balls and one caused turnover, while Mallory Ferrandiz caused five turnovers. Overall, New Haven held a 36-24 advantage in shots, a 26-23 margin in ground balls and a 15-14 edge in draws.

Head Coach Tom Campolettano and his squad return to Rockville Centre now to close out the regular season with a three-game homestand. Molloy will kick things off this Wednesday at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex against second-ranked C.W. Post.
