SOSNOWSKI AND LACEY LEAD WOMEN’S LACROSSE PAST DOMINICAN, 20-8, IN 2009 SEASON OPENER

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Mar. 3, 2009) – Junior midfielder Kristie Sosnowski (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) and sophomore midfielder Hayley Lacey (Levittown, N.Y.) combined to register 12 points off of seven goals and five assists to send the Molloy College women’s lacrosse team to a season-opening 20-8 victory versus Dominican College on Tuesday evening at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex in Rockville Centre, N.Y. Sosnowski also picked up a game-high nine draw controls for the Lions.

Leading 4-3 midway through the opening half, Molloy (1-0) scored six unanswered tallies over a seven-minute stretch to take a 10-3 lead with 7:30 left. The run featured goals from four different attackers. Freshman Gina Sepe (Deer Park, N.Y.) kicked things off with a tally off a feed from senior Erin Brady (Long Beach, N.Y.). She also dished off a pass to Lacey for one of her two markers in the streak. Sosnowski came next in the scoring. Freshman attacker Krystin Shand (Massapequa, N.Y.) was credited with the assist.

Shand added a goal as well in the run, which made the score 9-3 at the time. Sophomore midfielder Kristina Luparello (Massapequa, N.Y.) shot an attempt into the rear of the cage on an unassisted effort. Lacey and Shand teamed up to cap off the burst with a score at the 7:30 juncture. Two minutes later, Dominican (1-0) broke a 12-minute drought with an unassisted goal by sophomore defender/midfielder Sarah Kiernan (Saugerties, N.Y.). She would post another tally before the evening was up.

Not soon after, the Lions headed back to their respective bench up by an 11-4 score. Senior goaltender Alicia Frisch (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) played just 30 minutes between the pipes for the Lions, but stopped one shot and earned the win in the decision. Junior cageminder Lindsey Grundfast (Saugerties, N.Y.) made a game-high 15 saves for the Chargers, but was saddled with her first loss of the year.

In the second half, Molloy quickly put any chance of a rally to bed as it opened the period by registering seven straight goals during the first nine-plus minutes to go up by double digits at 17-4. Brady dished off two quick assists to jump start the run. Senior midfielder Kristin Lang (Hicksville, N.Y.) followed with a free-position marker. Sosnowski, Sepe and senior midfielder Mary Beth Ahern (Massapequa, N.Y.) closed it out with goals on unassisted efforts.

Lacey and Sosnowski each attempted seven shots – five of which were on goal. Sepe finished with four points off of two goals and two assists. Brady notched four points as well (1 G, 3 A). Shand posted one goal and two assists for three points. Junior attacker Rebecca LaFlare (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) collected a pair of goals with two ground balls and one draw control. Luparello and Lang had two goals apiece also in addition to three shots on goal for the Lions.

As for the Chargers, sophomore midfielder Silje Karlsen (Vernon, N.J.), Kiernan and freshman midfielder Aubree Williams (Great Meadows, N.J.) recorded two goals each. Karlsen also won three ground balls and caused two turnovers, while Williams contributed two ground balls. Junior attacker Ashley Ordemann (Toms River, N.J.) earned two draw controls and one goal. Freshman midfielder Alycia Shillingford (Cape May, N.J.) and Grundfast totaled three ground balls apiece.

Overall, Molloy held a 44-18 advantage in shots, a 23-7 margin in draw controls and a 17-13 edge in ground balls. The Lions were also 5-of-6 (.833) in clears, while the Chargers were successful in 42.8 percent (6-for-14) of their attempts. In the free position, Dominican notched four goals in six chances. Molloy had just one goal on five shots when inside the eight-meter line.

Head Coach Tom Campolettano and the Lions return to action this Saturday when they close out a two-game homestand against another Central Athletic Collegiate Conference foe in Chestnut Hill College.
