ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Apr. 22, 2009) - On Wednesday evening, second-ranked C.W. Post registered a 17-goal streak in the opening stanza to pace the match for a 22-9 victory in its favor against the Molloy College women's lacrosse team at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex in Rockville Centre, N.Y. With the defeat, the Lions dropped to 6-8 overall and 1-2 in East Coast Conference play. They have also lost two straight. As for the Pioneers, they have ran off 13 straight wins to go to 13-1 overall. C.W. Post is also 3-0 in league action.
Trailing 1-0 with 27-plus minutes to go in the first half, the Pioneers ran off four unanswered tallies over a span of 1:41 to get a 4-1 lead with 25:57 remaining. Senior midfielder Katie Hogan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and junior midfielder Brianne Jackolski (Shirley, N.Y.) accounted for the scoring in the spurt with two goals each. The Lions responded with two quick markers to cut the deficit to one at 4-3 with 24:58 left. Senior attacker Erin Brady (Long Beach, N.Y.) and junior midfielder Kristie Sosnowski (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) scored.
Four minutes later, the margin was still the same at one (5-4). C.W. Post then posted seven unanswered goals during an eight-minute stretch to grab its largest advantage of the contest at 12-4 with 14:21 to go. Hogan had two goals and two assists in the run. Junior attacker Staci Passafiume (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) picked up two goals and one assist. Senior attacker Jaclyn Napoli (West Islip, N.Y.) compiled a goal and an assist.
Following a marker from Molloy junior attacker Lori Sollitto (Wantagh, N.Y.) at the 12:34 mark, the Pioneers scored six straight prior to the conclusion of the half to head into the break up by a count of 17-5. The trio of Napoli, Passafiume and Hogan kicked things off with unassisted goals. Senior attacker Samantha Lyons (Farmingdale, N.Y.) capped it off with passes to Jackolski and Napoli at 0:40 and 0:26, respectively.
In the latter stanza, C.W. Post maintained its composure, and recorded four of the first five goals of the period. Freshman midfielder/defender Ashley Janelli (Glen Head, N.Y.) started up the burst with a marker on a feed from Passafiume. Freshman attacker/midfielder Ashley Olen (East Islip, N.Y.) continued with two straight. Freshman midfielder Nan Mayott (Islip, N.Y.) wrapped it up with a score at the 11:11 juncture.
Molloy senior goaltender Alicia Frisch (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) made one save, while sophomore goalies Sam Powers (Holbrook, N.Y.) and Marcela Hernandez (Freeport, N.Y.) combined to turn aside four shots for the Pioneers. C.W. Post sported a 27-22 advantage in shots, a 15-14 edge in ground balls and a 19-13 margin in draw controls. In clears, the Pioneers were 13-of-15 (86.7 percent), while the Lions converted on 61.5 (8-for-13) percent of their clear attempts. From the free position, MC notched three goals, while CWP had two.
Head Coach Tom Campolettano and the Lions return to action tomorrow when they continue their three-game homestand to close out the season against Northeast-10 Conference foe Assumption College.
