DUNN RAKES IN EXCELLENCE IN COMMUNITY AND CHARACTER DISTINCTION

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (Jul. 9, 2009) - This past week, senior forward Katelyn Dunn (Bethpage, N.Y.) of the Molloy College women's basketball team was chosen by the East Coast Conference to receive its Excellence in Community and Character Award. The accolade, which was created this year, recognizes student-athletes who have distinguished themselves with positive behaviors. They also keep up consistency with the NCAA Division II characteristics of learning, service, passion, sportsmanship, resourcefulness and balance.

Dunn can truly be considered one of the great models of a Division II student-athlete. On the court, she was a member of the Lions for four seasons. For her leadership traits, Dunn was tabbed as the team captain during her junior and senior campaigns. She was also a starter on the 2008 ECC Championship squad, which was the program and school's inaugural league crown and NCAA Tournament berth. Plus, Dunn was given the Molloy Athletic Department Recognition Award, which is presented to a dedicated and gallant Lion.

Off the hardwood, Dunn found herself participating in a variety of extra-curricular activities. She served as the President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for three years (2005-08). In her tenure at that position, Dunn was a leader in raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation by starting up events such as Links of Love, Midnight Madness and Battle of the Athletes. As a result, Molloy was atop the ECC highland in funds raised for the cause. The Lions have also elevated their monetary goal, and succeeded each year.

She was also involved with the Molloy Student Government Association for all four years. As such, Dunn was elected as the Senior Class President, and helped out in developing activities and events for the whole student body. She also taught at South Side High School in Rockville Centre, N.Y. - a position that Dunn presently holds. She graduated from Molloy this past May with a bachelor's degree in Adolescent Education along with a concentration in Social Studies and Special Education.

The other two honorees to take home the Excellence in Community and Character Award were senior guard Leonard Lans (Spring Valley, N.Y.) of the Dowling College men's basketball team and junior defender Jaclyn Bogensberger (Valley Stream, N.Y.) of the Adelphi University women's lacrosse team.
