WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ADVANCES TO SEMIFINALS

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY - Sophomore Kymira Woodberry (Boston, MA) posted 26 points to help lead the Molloy College women's basketball team to a 70-60 victory over the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College on March 5 in the quarterfinals of the East Coast Conference playoffs. The Lady Lions advance to the ECC semifinals where they will face C.W. Post on Saturday, March 8 at Queens College.

Molloy opened the game with an 8-2 run but STAC answered back with an 8-3 run to bring their deficit to one (11-10). The Lady Lions and the Spartans traded baskets but Molloy pulled ahead and took their biggest lead (28-16) of the first half after two free throws by senior Randi Bender (North Bellmore, NY) with 7:18 left. Molloy kept their distance from STAC and headed into the locker room with a 10 point edge (41-31).

Back-to-back lay-ups by sophomore E.J. Dreyer (Floral Park, NY) extended the Lady Lions advantage to 14 (51-37). At the midpoint of the second half, a lay-up by sophomore Lisa Abitante (Brooklyn, NY) gave Molloy a 55-39 lead. For the final ten minutes, the Lady Lions did not let STAC come any closer than 10 points as they came away with the 70-60 victory.

Woodberry led all players with 26 points and she added eight rebounds, while Bender contributed 16 points. Dreyer had eight points and nine rebounds, while sophomore C.J. Jones (Boston, MA) posted eight points.
