BRIDGEPORT STOPS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL WINNING STREAK AT 10

BRIDGEPORT, CT- The Molloy College women's basketball team had their ten game winning streak snapped by the Purple Knights of the University of Bridgeport on February 6. The Lady Lions fall to 11-10 overall and 9-5 in the East Coast Conference, while the Purple Knights improve to 11-10 and 8-6.

Molloy and Bridgeport battled the entire first half with neither team taking more than a five point advantage and the half seeing six tie scores. With the game even at 27, Bridgeport scored the final two baskets to head into the locker room with the 31-27.

Four minutes into the second half, the Purple Knights extended their edge to seven (37-30). A three pointer by junior Jenna McLaughlin (Carle Place, NY) cut the Lady Lions deficit to four (39-35) with 12:12 left in the game. The Purple Knights went up by eight points (49-41) but jumpers by McLaughlin and sophomore E.J. Dreyer (Floral Park, NY) brought the Lady Lions back to within four (49-45) as 5:31 ticks remained on the clock. However, over the next three minutes, Bridgeport went on a 9-2 run to grab the 58-47 advantage and that would prove to be enough for the Purple Knights as they came away with the 65-56 conference victory.

The Lady Lions were led by Dreyer who finished the game with 15 points, 8 rebounds five assists and six steals. McLaughlin added 13 points and three steals, while senior Randi Bender (North Bellmore, NY) pitched in with 11 points. Sophomore Kymira Woodberry (Boston, MA) recorded 10 points and six rebounds during the game.

The Lady Lions will travel back to Connecticut on Saturday, February 9 when they take on the University of New Haven at 2:00 PM.
