TWELVE LADY LIONS SCORE AS WOMENS BASKETBALL DEFEATS MERCY, 87-44
ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY- Twelve Lady Lions posted points as the Molloy College women's basketball team defeated the Mavericks of Mercy College on January 9. The 87-44 conference victory improves the Lady Lions overall record to 4-9 and their ECC record to 3-4, while Mercy drops to 3-10 and 3-4.
Sophomore Kymira Woodberry (Boston, MA) scored six of the Lady Lions first 10 points as Molloy took the early 10-4 advantage. Back-to-back baskets by sophomore Tatiana Lopez (Lakeview, NY) gave Molloy a 30-8 edge with 9:01 left. The Lady Lions kept building their lead and went into intermission with a 27 point cushion. In the first half, Mercy committed 21 turnovers and Molloy was able to convert 21 points off their turnovers. The Lady Lions recorded 17 assists, while the Mavericks posted only four assists.
Three minutes into the second half, Woodberry's three point play gave the Lady Lions a 33 point lead (57-24) with 16:50 left in the game. Molloy kept their distance from the Mavericks and took their biggest advantage of the game (45 points) after a lay-up by freshman Brittany Jones (Elmont, NY). The Lady Lions went on to capture the East Coast Conference victory by a margin of 43 points (87-44).
Woodberry led the pack with 23 points and 12 rebounds, while Jones finished the game with 11 points and five rebounds. Sophomore E.J. Dreyer (Floral Park, NY) and senior Randi Bender (North Bellmore, NY) each contributed 10 points, while Dreyer added six steals.
The Lady Lions take the weekend off and will return to action on Monday, January 14 when they travel to Concordia College for a 5:00 PM conference game.
