OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Apr. 29, 2009) – On Wednesday, freshman third baseman Josette Cavallaro (North Babylon, N.Y.) hit 1-for-3 at the plate, but it wasn't enough as the fifth-seeded Molloy College softball team fell to No. 4 seed New York Institute of Technology, 5-0, in the opening round of the double-elimination East Coast Conference Championship in Old Westbury, N.Y. With the defeat, the Lions went to an overall mark of 20-25. The Bears improved to 35-23-1 on the year.
NYIT drew first blood in the latter of the first with a two-spot. Senior outfielder Brilynn Fields (Aurora, Colo.) slapped a one-out RBI single into right-center field to score junior outfielder Anna Hernandez (Tucson, Ariz.). Two batters after, senior shortstop Ashley Gosk (Bay Shore, N.Y.) sent an RBI double down the left-field line.
In Bottom-3, junior third baseman Brooklynn Fields (Aurora, Colo.) extended the Bears’ margin to three (3-0) after coming home on a steal attempt by senior second baseman Lauren Sabia (Tucson, Ariz.).
Brilynn Fields made the count 4-0 in the fifth. She came in following a dropped fly by senior outfielder Michelle Walsh (Bellerose, N.Y.). NYIT capped off the scoring during the ensuing inning on a solo shot to left-center field by sophomore utility Marissa Brucculeri (Albertson, N.Y.).
Senior pitcher Nina Cesare (Whitestone, N.Y.) earned her 17th victory of the season after tossing a complete game shutout. She yielded just two hits and two walks, while striking out seven for the Bears. As for the Lions, sophomore right-hander Lauren Urbont (Long Beach, N.Y.) gave up six hits, five runs (four earned) and four walks over 6.0 innings of work. She also fanned five in the process.
