CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (Apr. 28, 2009) – On
Tuesday morning, the East Coast Conference released the six-team
field for its 2009 Softball Championship, and Molloy College earned
the fifth seed. The Lions will face the No. 4 seed Bears of New
York Institute of Technology in an opening round match-up on
Wednesday in Old Westbury, N.Y. Action is scheduled to get started
from the NYIT Softball Complex at 3 p.m.
This past Sunday, Molloy and NYIT split its regular-season
doubleheader. The Bears took Game One by a final score of 9-6,
while the Lions won the nightcap, 7-3. Molloy comes in sporting an
overall mark of 20-24. NYIT is at 34-23-1 on the year. The victor
of that contest will square off with top-seeded Dowling College,
which got a first-round bye. The Golden Lions finished out the 2009
season with a ledger of 31-16. The Bears and Lions were swept by
Dowling in their respective league twin bills.
Wednesday’s other battle will see third-seeded C.W. Post
take on sixth-seeded Queens College. On March 30, the Pioneers and
Knights split with each other. Queens pulled out a 4-3 decision in
its favor during the opener, while C.W. Post took Game Two in a
blowout, 11-2. The winner will get second-seeded Adelphi University
on Friday in quarterfinal action. The Panthers ended the season
with a mark of 32-12 overall. They split with the arch-rival
Pioneers on April 19, and won both against the Knights five days
earlier.
The winner of Sunday's title game will earn an automatic bid to
the NCAA Division II Tournament. For more information on the 2009
