ERIE, Pa. (Sept. 26, 200 – Down 2-0 at
the break, the Molloy College men’s soccer team trimmed the
deficit in half with an early marker from junior forward/midfielder
Mike Adamcewicz (Hicksville, N.Y.). But, it was
not enough as the Lions fell to the 18th-ranked Lakers of
Mercyhurst College by a final of 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at
Mercyhurst Field in Erie, Pa. With the loss, the Lions dropped to
an overall record of 3-4-1. As for the Lakers, they improved to 7-2
on the 2009 campaign.
Mercyhurst received both of its tallies from senior defenseman
Nicholas Thompson (London, England) in the opening
half. They were also on unassisted efforts. With 35:36 elapsed, he
notched his seventh goal when the England native kicked a 35-yard
shot with his left foot into the back of the net. Forty seconds
later, Thompson placed a ball from the goal line past Molloy
sophomore goalkeeper Carlos Barros (Mineola,
N.Y.), who had three saves in the contest. Freshman keeper
Diego Gustin (Lima, Peru) stopped five shots for
the Lakers.
Overall, Mercyhurst sported a 13-11 margin in shots, while Molloy
held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks. Adamcewicz and senior midfielder
Jose Batista (Rego Park, N.Y.) raked a team-best
three shots each for the Lions. As for the Lakers, they were led by
junior forward Billy Colton (Pitsea, England) and
junior midfielder Christoph Hampel (Berlin,
Germany), who took three shots apiece. Thompson
contributed two shots.
Head Coach Danny Longo and his squad return to the field next
Saturday when Molloy starts up its East Coast Conference slate
against St. Thomas Aquinas College at the Dean G. Skelos Sports
Complex in Rockville Centre, N.Y. The opening kick is slated for 3
