GAMEZS FIVE-POINT NIGHT LIFTS MENS SOCCER OVER QUEENS IN REGULAR-SEASON FINALE, 4-2

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Oct. 29, 2008) - Sophomore forward Emmanuel Gamez (Freeport, N.Y.) collected five points off of two goals and one assist on Wednesday evening to lead the Molloy College men's soccer team to a 4-2 win against East Coast Conference nemesis Queens College in its final game of the regular season in Rockville Centre, N.Y.
Prior to tonight's contest, the Lions said goodbye to their 10 seniors in a pre-game ceremony. They were Anthony Dalli (Valley Stream, N.Y.), Bart Charkow (Valley Stream, N.Y.), Josu Cabruja (Isla De Margarita, Venezuela), Nick Bell (Valley Stream, N.Y.), William Bell (Valley Stream, N.Y.), Kieran Wallis (Rockville Centre, N.Y.), Nick D'Alessandro (West Hempstead, N.Y.), Mike Roecklein (Lake Grove, N.Y.), Ettore Morelli (North Bellmore, N.Y.) and Michael Topel (Levittown, N.Y.).
Molloy (10-5-2, 5-2-1 ECC) jumped out of the gate quick in the opening half as Gamez scored just 2:40 into the period. On the play, he kicked a loose ball from 10 yards out into the lower left corner of the goal. Soon after that, D'Alessandro made it 2-0 with a shot that went into the same part of the netting. Gamez was tabbed with the assist.
Five minutes into the latter stanza, sophomore midfielder Mike Marques (Mineola, N.Y.) continued to stay hot with his fourth goal in three games on a feed from sophomore midfielder Jose Batista (Forest Hills, N.Y.). He headed a ball off a corner kick into the left side of the net for his fourth marker of the year. Later, in the 65th-minute, Gamez recorded his second tally of the evening after putting back his own rebound off of a save by Queens (9-5-2, 4-2-1 ECC) junior goalkeeper Ivan Salame (Ecuador).
Six minutes later, the Knights tried to spur a late comeback by posting two goals in a span of 3:55. Senior midfielder/defender Noorullah Mashriqi (Kandahar, Afghanistan) picked up three points in that streak with a goal and an assist. Junior midfielder Terrence Ahoua (Paris, France) got the assist on that marker. Senior midfielder Amir Perelman (Israel) registered the other tally.
Salame and Morelli made two saves apiece. The Lions owned a 16-8 advantage in shots and a 6-0 margin in corner kicks. Gamez attempted a game-high five shots. Marques contributed four shots. D'Alessandro and Batista added two shots each. Freshman midfielder Anthony Morais (Mineola, N.Y.), freshman midfielder/defender Jeff Patino (Bayside, N.Y.) and junior midfielder Graeme Roderick (Liverpool, England) had a shot credited to their names as well.
For Queens, senior midfielder Francisco Patino (Barranquilla, Colombia) and Perelman took a team-high two shots. Mashriqi, junior midfielder Mujibullah Mashriqi (Flushing, N.Y.) and junior forward Jesus Daniel Cano (Barranquilla, Colombia) posted one shot on goal apiece.
Molloy finished out the regular season with an overall record of 10-5-2 and an ECC mark of 5-2-1. The Lions will now await word on where they will be seeded in the league tournament, which is scheduled to start with semifinal action next Wednesday. They can get a home game with a loss by the University of Bridgeport tonight at Dowling College in Brookhaven, N.Y.
