LAST-SECOND GOAL IN DOUBLE OVERTIME DOOMS MEN’S SOCCER AGAINST NYIT, 2-1

Box Score vs. NYIT - October 7, 2008

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Oct. 7, 2008) - Sophomore midfielder/forward John Massey (Freeport, N.Y.) recorded the game-winning tally for the New York Institute of Technology men's soccer squad with 22 seconds left in double overtime to snap Molloy College's five-game winning streak with a 2-1 decision at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex in Rockville Centre, N.Y. With the loss, the Lions also had their seven-game unbeaten stretch halted.

On the play, sophomore forward Maciek Serafin (Lindenhurst, N.Y.), who was tabbed with the assist, took hold of a free ball and cut through the midfield to get a two-on-none breakaway with Massey. Serafin broke to the goal and sent a cross to the eventual scorer, who then struck the ball into the top-left part of the netting to win the game for the Bears (5-5-1, 1-1 ECC).

Serafin was also responsible for the contest's opening score as he found himself on a fast break yet again. This time, Serafin placed a shot into the top-shelf of the goal off a feed from freshman defender/midfielder Rafael Xavier (Porto Alegre, Brazil). The marker was Serafin's team-best ninth of the season.

Later on, Molloy (6-4-1, 2-1 ECC) drew even at 1-all when sophomore forward Emmanuel Gamez (Freeport, N.Y.) kicked a misplayed save, which became a rebound, by NYIT junior goaltender Cosmo D'Agostino (Brampton, Ontario) into a wide-open net. Sophomore midfielder Jose Batista (Forest Hills, N.Y.) caused the turnover and was given the assist on the tally.

D'Agostino and Lions' senior goalkeeper Ettore Morelli (North Bellmore, N.Y.) knocked down four shots apiece in the match. Gamez, Serafin and Bears' junior forward Andre Lee (Montego Bay, Jamaica) each attempted a game-high four shots. Xavier contributed three shots for NYIT. Senior midfielder Michael Topel (Levittown, N.Y.) added two shots for Molloy, which was out-shot by its opposition, 15-11. Both squads also had five corner kicks.

Head Coach Danny Longo and the Lions return to action this Saturday when they open up a six-game stretch to close out the regular season at East Coast Conference rival Dowling College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
