BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. (Oct. 11, 2008) - On Saturday afternoon, junior forward Lamine Traore (Mali, Africa) notched the game-winning goal for the Dowling College men's soccer team early into the first overtime period to down Molloy College by a 3-2 score at Golden Lions' Field in Brookhaven, N.Y. With the loss, the Lions lost their second-straight game in extra time, and went to 6-5-1 overall and 2-2 in East Coast Conference action.
On the play, Traore stole a ball from the Molloy defense inside the penalty box. He then kicked a shot into the right corner of the goal to push Dowling (9-2, 4-0 ECC) to its sixth-consecutive win. Traore also recorded a game-high eight shots - four of which were on net.
The Lions reached the scoreboard first just 9:07 into the opening half. Senior forward Nick D'Alessandro (West Hempstead, N.Y.) chipped a shot from 18 yards out over Golden Lions' senior goalkeeper Nemanja Veljovic (Belgrade, Serbia). Senior midfielder William Bell (Valley Stream, N.Y.) was credited with the assist on the tally.
11 minutes later, Traore picked up his first marker of the contest on an unassisted effort to draw the two squads even at 1-all. From five yards away, he dribbled a ball past Molloy senior keeper Ettore Morelli (North Bellmore, N.Y.), and put it into the back of the net.
Shortly thereafter, in the 33rd-minute, sophomore midfielder Jose Batista (Forest Hills, N.Y.) gave Molloy the lead back at 2-1 when he received a feed from the right wing by D'Alessandro, and proceeded to net a shot from 12 yards out. After a scoreless 12 minutes that followed, the Lions went into the intermission with a one-goal advantage.
In the latter half, Dowling knotted the match for the second time on the afternoon in the 68th-minute as junior midfielder Moussa Keita (Guinea, West Africa) tallied his third goal of the 2008 campaign on a penalty kick.
Morelli made a game-high nine saves, while Veljovic turned aside two shots. The Golden Lions held a 19-8 advantage in shots and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Keita totaled four shots for Dowling - all of which were on net. D'Alessandro collected three shots for Molloy.
Head Coach Danny Longo and the Lions return to action this Wednesday when they travel to Lodi, N.J. to face Central Athletic Collegiate Conference nemesis Felician College. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
