ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Sept. 27, 2008) - The Molloy College men's soccer team tallied all five of its goals in the second half on Saturday afternoon to earn its third-straight win with a 5-1 rout of Briarcliffe College at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex in Rockville Centre, N.Y. With the decision, the Lions also extended their unbeaten streak to five in a row.
After a scoreless first half, Molloy (4-3-1) notched the game's opening goal in the 50th-minute when sophomore forward Emmanuel Gamez (Freeport, N.Y.) placed a shot in the lower right corner of the netting off a cross from senior midfielder Michael Topel (Levittown, N.Y.). Two minutes later, the Lions made it 2-0 as senior midfielder William Bell (Valley Stream, N.Y.) found the lower left corner of the goal on a feed from sophomore midfielder Jose Batista (Forest Hills, N.Y.).
On the play, Batista sent a through ball to Bell on a free kick attempt, who then punched it past Briarcliffe (3-8) junior goalkeeper Felipe Amado (Sao Paulo, Brazil). Later, in the 74th-minute, Topel got his first tally of the season as he put a ball off Amado's hands and into the lower left netting. Freshman forward Anthony D'Antonio (Oceanside, N.Y.) was credited with the assist.
Three minutes later, freshman midfielder Alan Acevedo (Queens, N.Y.) got the Seahawks on the board as he scored from 12 yards out on an unassisted effort. In the 81st-minute, sophomore midfielder Jason Fiscina (North Massapequa, N.Y.) recorded his first-ever collegiate goal as he headed a shot into the netting off a cross from sophomore midfielder Mike Marques (Mineola, N.Y.).
Six minutes later, junior defender Anthony Dalli (Valley Stream, N.Y.) capped off the scoring for the Lions as he took a shot from the corner, which went over freshman netminder Trimaine Johnson's (Jamaica, N.Y.) head and into the right side of the goal.
Amado and Johnson combined for a game-high eight saves for Briarcliffe, while senior keeper Ettore Morelli (North Bellmore, N.Y.) and freshman goaltender Carlos Barros (Mineola, N.Y.) turned aside one shot apiece for Molloy. The Lions also held a 22-9 advantage in shots and a 10-2 margin in corner kicks.
