DOLAN SCORES FOUR GOALS AS NO. 6 MEN’S LACROSSE DRIVES PAST FARMINGDALE, 13-5

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (Mar. 25, 2009) – Junior midfielder Matt Dolan (Plainedge, N.Y.) found the back of the cage a game-high four times on Wednesday afternoon to push the sixth-ranked Molloy College men’s lacrosse team past Division III program Farmingdale State College, 13-5, at Rams’ Field in Farmingdale, N.Y. With the result, the Lions remain undefeated as they went to an overall mark of 6-0. The Rams fell to 3-4 on the campaign. They have also dropped two of their last three decisions.

Knotted at 1-up with just under four minutes remaining in the first quarter, Molloy registered three unanswered tallies in a two-minute stint to grab hold of a 4-1 advantage at its conclusion. Freshman attacker Ryan Kudlek (Oceanside, N.Y.) had a goal and an assist in the run. Senior midfielder Keith Galante (Plainedge, N.Y.) and sophomore attacker Brandon Peyer (Williston Park, N.Y.) picked up a goal apiece. Galante notched another marker in the second quarter on an unassisted effort. The Lions eventually went into the break ahead 6-1.

Molloy opened the third quarter with three scores in a row to take a 9-1 lead. Dolan capped off the streak with back-to-back markers. The assists came from Kudlek and senior midfielder Mike Vetrano (Bethpage, N.Y.). Junior midfielder Victor Galasso (West Islip, N.Y.) accounted for the other. The stanza was finished off via the end of a scoring drought by Farmingdale. Freshmen attackers Erick Thomson (Floral Park, N.Y.) and Bill McGarvey (Sayville, N.Y.) struck the netting at the 8:27 and 7:01 junctures, respectively.

The Lions put the contest away for good in the fourth quarter with three tallies during a five-minute stretch to notch a 12-3 margin in their favor with 6:58 remaining in regulation. Dolan and sophomore midfielder Chris Oswald (Franklin Square, N.Y.) scored at even strength. Senior defender Chris Hupfer (Hicksville, N.Y.) got a man-down tally.

In addition to his four goals, Dolan dished out one assist for five points. He also attempted nine shots and picked up five ground balls. Kudlek registered three points (1 G, 2 A) and three ground balls. Peyer, Galante and senior midfielder Joseph Geneva (Hicksville, N.Y.) notched two points apiece. Galante also won six ground balls and caused one turnover, while Peyer raked three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Senior midfielder Peter Bonelli (Commack, N.Y.) recorded 13 faceoff victories and seven ground balls.

Vetrano totaled seven ground balls and one assist. Senior defender Guy Eccher (West Islip, N.Y.) checked in with six ground balls and two caused turnovers. Sophomore defender Joe Vissichelli (Hicksville, N.Y.) had five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Hupfer and senior midfielder Albert Maione (West Islip, N.Y.) posted four ground balls each. Senior goaltender Robert Humann (Hicksville, N.Y.) made a game-high 12 saves and totaled four ground balls.

For the Rams, Thomson and sophomore attacker Eddie Rifice (Babylon, N.Y.) compiled two points apiece. Thomson also took a team-leading nine shots. Freshman midfielder Joe Nacarlo (West Babylon, N.Y.) accumulated six faceoffs, four ground balls and one caused turnover. Freshman defender Chris JapNgie (Massapequa, N.Y.) gathered six ground balls and one caused turnover. Senior cageminder Teddy Leone (East Meadow, N.Y.) and freshman goalkeeper Patrick Delventhal (Westbury, N.Y.) combined to turn aside 18 shots.

Molloy owned a 70-41 advantage in ground balls and a 49-24 edge in shots. In the faceoff department, the Lions won 14-of-22 (63.6 percent). Farmingdale won 36.4 percent (8-of-22) of its faceoffs. Molloy was 22-of-23 (95.7 percent) in its clearing attempts. On the other hand, the Rams sported a successful clear percentage of 78.6 (22-for-28). Neither squad was able to convert on an extra-man opportunity.
