MEN’S BASKETBALL SELECTED SIXTH IN ECC PRESEASON POLL

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. – The East Coast Conference released its preseason poll on Wednesday for men’s basketball, and Molloy College was picked sixth by the league’s coaches. The Lions, who recorded a mark of 8-20 overall and a ledger of 7-11 against league opposition last season, amassed a total of 26 points in the tally. After reaching the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division II Tournament in 2008-09, C.W. Post was dubbed the favorite to re-capture the title. The Pioneers earned three first-place votes, and 57 points.



NEW YORK, N.Y. – Former Molloy College men’s basketball player Glenn Martin spent his Labor Day at work as he made an appearance on the Fox TV morning show Good Day, New York. Martin displayed his DJ skills as he spun records and answered questions from co-hosts Greg Kelly and Rosanna Scotto. His ability to control the crowds on the basketball court transitioned into a career doing the same from inside the booth.

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – Very recently, the Molloy College men’s basketball team pieced together its own Midnight Run. The players left the school in two vans with clothes, food and toiletries for the homeless. They later returned home with nothing left over in the bins.

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Sophomore forward Brian Hutchinson posted a double-double on Wednesday with 16 points and 11 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as the No. 8 seed Molloy College men’s basketball team fell by a 98-63 decision to top-seeded and second-ranked C.W. Post in an East Coast Conference quarterfinal at the Pratt Recreation Center in Brookville, N.Y. With the defeat, the Lions finished the 2009 season with an overall record of 8-20 and a league mark of 7-11.

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. – Freshman guard Chris Manning landed his name on the East Coast Conference Men’s Basketball All-Rookie Team on Tuesday as the league announced its year-end honors. This season, he earned ECC Rookie of the Week recognition four times, and led the conference in steals per game with an average of 3.59. He is also ranked second in the country in that same category.

SPARKILL, N.Y. – Junior guard Carl Palmer tallied a game-high 24 points on Saturday afternoon to lead the Molloy College men’s basketball team to a 70-61 win over East Coast Conference opponent St. Thomas Aquinas College in its final regular-season match-up of 2008-09 at Aquinas Hall in Sparkill, N.Y. He scored 17 of his points in the opening half and drained a total of six three-pointers in the game.

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. - On Wednesday, Queens College netted 10 shots from beyond the arc to defeat the Molloy College men’s basketball squad, 78-52, at Quealy Gymnasium in Rockville Centre, N.Y. With the loss, the Lions ran their losing streak to six games in a row. They are also 7-19 overall and 6-11 versus East Coast Conference foes. As for the Knights, they improved to 9-17 and 7-10 in league play.

Fitts also brought down four rebounds and swiped three steals for the Lions, who went to 7-17 overall and 6-9 against East Coast Conference opposition.

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – Knotted at 67-67 with more than a minute remaining in overtime, junior guard Casey Cosgrove had the eventual game-winning point via a free throw for Adelphi University as the Panthers snuck by the Molloy College men’s basketball team, 68-67, at Quealy Gymnasium on Saturday in Rockville Centre, N.Y. The Lions fell to 7-16 overall and 6-8 in the East Coast Conference with the defeat.
