HUTCHINSON NABS 14 REBOUNDS AS MEN’S BASKETBALL GETS TOPPED BY POST, 82-60

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Jan. 19, 2009) - Sophomore forward Brian Hutchinson (Elmont, N.Y.) grabbed a game-high 14 boards, but it didn't get the job done for the Molloy College men's basketball team as it lost its eighth-straight game to Post University, 82-60, on Monday in a non-conference contest at Quealy Gymnasium in Rockville Centre, N.Y. He also recorded seven points and passed two assists in the defeat. 

Leading 18-16 with more than 11 minutes remaining in the first half, the Eagles (8-6) out-scored the Lions (3-12) by a 23-6 count from that point as they went into the break up 41-22. In that run, Post put together a 17-0 streak over a six-minute stretch. Junior guard Cecil Stinson (Montclair, N.J.) and senior forwards A.J. Reitter (Baltimore, Md.) and Omar Robinson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each netted a trey. Freshman forward Marquis Grant (Jamaica, N.Y.) added four points. 

During the period, sophomore guard Spencer Smith (White Plains, N.Y.) tallied 12 points on 4-for-4 shooting. Stinson, Robinson and Grant posted six points apiece. Reitter had five points. As for Molloy, Hutchinson grabbed 10 rebounds and earned four points. Junior forward Girard Fitts (Uniondale, N.Y.) raked eight points. Freshman forward Matt Wafula (Harlem, N.Y.) and junior guard Michael Johnson (Jamaica, N.Y.) totaled four points each. 

The opening part of the second half featured a pair of seven-point trade-offs between the squads. Then, with over 12 minutes left, Post led by 20 points at 55-35. The Eagles subsequently went on an 8-2 burst in a span of 2:58 to take a 63-37 lead with 9:20 to go. Grant and Smith started with a lay-up each. Freshman guard/forward Brandon Romain (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and senior guard Rob McClain (Waterbury, Conn.) wrapped it up with jumpers, which secured a victory for Post. 

For the game, the Lions shot 32.4 percent (22-for-68) from the field and 44.4 percent (12-for-27) from the charity stripe. Fitts finished with 11 points, three rebounds, three steals and one block. Johnson and junior guard Chris Manning (Queens, N.Y.) collected 10 points each. Manning also had seven steals, four assists and three boards, while Johnson had six rebounds, four assists and three rebounds. 

Freshman forward/center Dariel Concha (Valley Stream, N.Y.) amassed eight points, eight boards and one steal. Freshman forward Sean Hehir (Massapequa, N.Y.) compiled five points, three rebounds and two assists. Wafula registered four points, two blocks and one board. Junior forward Ian Thomas-Minor (Brooklyn, N.Y.) crashed the glass for five rebounds and had three points. Freshman guard T.J. Gessner (Mineola, N.Y.) added two points and two boards. 

As for the Eagles, they were 32-of-77 (41.6 percent), 7-of-22 (31.8 percent) and 11-of-16 (68.8 percent) from the foul line. Romain posted a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. He also swiped five steals. Smith raked in 14 points, four boards, two assists and two steals. Grant scored 10 points. Stinson grabbed 12 rebounds and notched nine points. Robinson and Reitter tallied nine points apiece. Reitter also picked up eight boards, four assists and two steals. 

Senior guard/forward James Lee (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) collected five points, one assist and one rebound. McClain earned four points, two boards, one assist and one steal. Freshman forward Larry Smith (Hollywood, Fla.) and senior center Jesse Iyalekhue (Bronx, N.Y.) recorded two points apiece. Iyalekhue also pulled down seven rebounds. 

Head Coach Charlie Marquardt and his squad return to action this Wednesday when Molloy closes out its three-game homestand against C.W. Post, which is ranked No. 3 in the recent National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) poll. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
