MARTIN POSTS 22 POINTS DURING MENS BASKETBALL LOSS TO MERCY
DOBBS FERRY, NY- Senior Glenn Martin (Brooklyn, NY) led all players with 22 points but it was not enough as the Molloy College men's basketball team fell to the Mavericks of Mercy College on February 16. The 80-64 East Coast Conference loss drops the Lions to 8-15 overall and 6-11 in league play, while Mercy improves to 8-16 and 7-10.
Four minutes into the game, Mercy held the 14-7 lead but Molloy made it a three point game (14-11) after two free throws by senior Vincent Falzone (Middle Village, NY) and a lay-up by freshman Brian Hutchinson (Elmont, NY). However, back-to-back three pointers by Mercy's Michael Marin increased the Mavericks advantage to 14 (30-16) with 12 minutes left in the half. Mercy kept on top for the remainder of the half and headed into the locker room with the 50-31 edge.
During the first six minutes of the second half, Molloy outscored Mercy, 10-2 and cut their deficit to 11 (52-41). A three point play by Martin brought Molloy to within five (54-49) as 12:05 was left on the scoreboard. But a three pointer by Mercy's Chanze Wellington at the 6:15 minute mark gave the Mavericks a 13 point advantage (67-54). Mercy would hold their own for the rest of the game as they came away with the 80-64 conference victory.
Sophomore Girard Fitts (Uniondale, NY) had 13 points on the day, while junior Michael Johnson (Jamaica, NY) added 10 points and five assists. Falzone fell short of a double-double with eight points and 14 rebounds.
