FALZONES TWO FREE THROWS WITH THREE SECONDS LEFT ALLOWS MENS BASKETBALL TO SNEAK BY CONCORDIA
BRONXVILLE, NY- Two free throws by senior Vincent Falzone (Middle Village, NY) gave the Molloy College men's basketball team a 73-72 East Coast Conference victory over the Clippers of Concordia College on January 14. With the win, the Lions improve their overall record to 8-6 and their conference record to 6-2, while the Clippers drop to 4-11 and 3-5.
Concordia jumped out to a 13-8 advantage but back-to-back baskets by junior Carl Palmer (Brooklyn, NY) and a lay-up by senior Glenn Martin (Brooklyn, NY) gave Molloy the one point edge (14-13) with 13:41 left on the clock. Over the next 11 minutes the game would be tied seven different times until Molloy took the 38-34 lead at halftime.
The Clippers outscored the Lions, 19-10 during the first five minutes of the second half to go ahead 53-48. Concordia held the lead for most of the second half but a three pointer by Palmer evened the score at 71 as 1:33 remained on the clock. Concordia's Kenny Gaskins went to the line with 21 seconds left but was only able to convert one of two free throws. Falzone was fouled by Lamont Wilson with three ticks left and put the Lions ahead by two after notching both free throws. Concordia had one chance left but Gaskins shot bounced off the rim and Molloy took the 73-72 conference victory.
Falzone finished the game with a double-double (14 points; 12 rebounds), while Martin led all scorers with 20 points and added eight rebounds. Palmer and freshman Brian Hutchinson (Elmont, NY) each chipped in with 15 points, while Hutchinson also had eight rebounds.
The Lions remain on the road and will play St. Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday, January 19 for a 3:00 PM ECC game.
