MARTIN SCORES 24; FALZONE GRABS DOUBLE-DOUBLE AS MENS BASKETBALL HOLDS OFF NEW HAVEN
ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY- Senior Glenn Martin (Brooklyn, NY) led the Lions with 24 points and senior Vincent Falzone (Middle Village, NY) grabbed a double-double as the Molloy College men's basketball team defeated the Chargers of the University of New Haven on December 12 at Quealy Gymnasium. The Lions increase their overall record to 6-3 and their East Coast Conference record to 4-2, while the Chargers drop to 4-4 and 3-2.
A jumper by sophomore Girard Fitts (Uniondale, NY) gave Molloy the early 13-8 advantage. New Haven charged back and made it a one point game (21-20) as 8:40 remained on the clock. However, the Lions answered back by scoring 11 straight points and took a 12 point lead (32-20). Molloy entered intermission with a nine point edge (39-30) over New Haven.
The Chargers opened the second half with an 9-2 run and brought their deficit to two (41-39). The Lions pulled ahead again as a lay-up by Falzone sparked a 12-2 run and Molloy went up by 12 points (53-41). Molloy's lead slowly slipped away as New Haven cut their disadvantage to two (59-57) with just over six minutes left in the game. But again, the Lions surged ahead and would not let New Haven regain the lead as Molloy came away with the 81-74 conference victory.
Martin led all players with 24 points, while Falzone pulled down 11 rebounds and added 22 points. Freshman Brian Hutchinson (Elmont, NY) pitched in with 11 points, while Fitts finished the game with eight points.
The Lions take the weekend off and will return to action on Monday, December 17 when they host non-conference Felician College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
