Box Score vs. Dowling - May 9, 2009
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (May. 9, 2009) –
Freshman right-hander Justin Jorgensen (Bethpage,
N.Y.) struck out a game-best seven hitters on Saturday,
but it wasn’t enough as the No. 2 seed Molloy College
baseball team lost to No. 4 seed Dowling College by a final of 4-2
at Bonomo Memorial Field on the campus of Adelphi University in
Garden City, N.Y. He also gave up four hits, four walks and three
earned runs in the defeat, which dropped him to a final ledger of
7-4 in his rookie year.
Scoreless after three innings of play, The Golden Lions (29-14) got
all the runs they would need with a three-run effort. Junior first
baseman Daniel Pembroke (Shoreham, N.Y.) belted a
double into center field, which scored sophomore third baseman
Colin Barnathan (Massapequa, N.Y.). Three batters
later, junior second baseman Joe Trainor (Massapequa,
N.Y.) doubled in Pembroke. The stanza was capped off by
sophomore outfielder Brian Ferguson (Ronkonkoma,
N.Y.), who batted a sacrifice fly to left field in
Top-4.
Two innings after, Molloy (26-19) reached the scoreboard when
junior catcher Brian Benes (Omaha, Neb.) ran on in
off a double play ball by senior second baseman Peter Loeb
(College Point, N.Y.). During the top of the eighth,
Dowling snatched the run back off of an RBI single through the
right side by senior outfielder Matthew Monastero (Ridge,
N.Y.). The Lions answered that same inning with one run,
which finished off the scoring. Junior outfielder T.J.
Greig (Staten Island, N.Y.) slapped an RBI single to
left.
Head Coach Joe Fucarino and the Lions will now await word on a
possible at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Championship. The
bracket is scheduled to be released on Sunday evening.
