GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (Apr. 14, 2009) – Down
2-0 in the top of the fifth, the Molloy College baseball team
posted four runs to grab the lead, and never looked back from that
point as it downed Adelphi University by a 7-4 score on Tuesday
afternoon at Bonomo Memorial Field in Garden City, N.Y. With the
victory, the Lions went to 18-14 overall and 9-5 versus East Coast
Conference opposition. As for the Panthers, they presently own a
ledger of 19-9 and an 11-3 mark in the league.
Molloy earned four different RBI base hits in the inning. Junior
outfielder T.J. Greig (Staten Island, N.Y.) had a
single to get home freshman designated hitter Frank
Marchisello (Staten Island, N.Y.). Sophomore outfielder
Robert LaRusso (Bayside, N.Y.) reached on a
fielder’s choice in the following at-bat for a ribbie.
Sophomore infielder Joseph Menendez (Washington Heights,
N.Y.) continued with an RBI double. Senior infielder
Patrick Walsh (Bellmore, N.Y.) capped off the
inning with a single, which plated LaRusso.
One inning later, the Lions amassed two more runs to take a 6-2
advantage. Greig and LaRusso each got their second RBI with a
respective single and double. The Panthers diminished the shortfall
in half in Bottom-6 on a run-scoring single by freshman infielder
Lucas Romeo (Queens, N.Y.).
Adelphi tallied its opening two runs in the bottom of the
second. Senior first baseman Bill Melillo (Glenwood
Landing, N.Y.) and sophomore outfielder Joe
Cassano (Staten Island, N.Y.) raked an RBI base hit
apiece.
On the mound, senior right-hander Eric Williams (Stamford,
Conn.) got the win for Molloy. He surrendered nine hits,
three runs and two walks, while striking out six in seven innings
of work. Senior pitcher Michael Vecchione (Levittown,
N.Y.) picked up the save although he yielded one run in
the ninth. For Adelphi, junior hurler Mike Bartlett
(Massapequa Park, N.Y.) was saddled with the loss. He
tossed 4.1 innings of five-hit, four-run, four-walk ball.
Head Coach Joe Fucarino and the Lions return to action tomorrow
when they host Central Athletic Collegiate Conference opponent
Bloomfield College in Rockville Centre, N.Y. First pitch is slated
for 3:30 p.m.
