CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (Jun. 26, 2009) - Senior infielder Patrick Walsh (Bellmore, N.Y.) from Molloy College was picked as the East Coast Conference Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Thursday by the Faculty Athletic Representative from each institution in the league. He was handed the honor for his work on the diamond and inside the classroom. Walsh, who graduated with a degree in Mathematics Education, posted a grade-point average of 3.79, and earned All-ECC first-team recognition.
For the Lions, Walsh batted .248 with one home run and 20 RBI. He also registered 41 runs scored and swiped 18 bases (20 attempts), while drawing 34 walks. As a result, Walsh was selected to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-East Region second-team. Furthermore, he was ranked 65th in the country in base on balls. Walsh also put himself in the Top-10 in the East Coast Conference in four categories. He was first in walks, second in runs scored, sixth in stolen bases and 10th in on-base percentage (.397).
Head Coach Joe Fucarino and his squad closed out the 2009 campaign with an overall record of 26-19 and an ECC ledger of 16-8, which was good enough for second place. The Lions also won three of the top four year-end awards. Junior outfielder T.J. Greig (Staten Island, N.Y.) garnered East Coast Conference Player of the Year kudos, freshman outfielder Carmine Pellechia (Staten Island, N.Y.) picked up Rookie of the Year accolades, and Fucarino took home Coach of the Year honors.
Three other student-athletes from Molloy were recognized on the ECC Honor Roll:
- Kelly LaClair (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) - Women's Lacrosse - Senior
- E.J. Dreyer (Floral Park, N.Y.) - Women's Basketball - Junior
