IRWIN AND PORTER SET SCHOOL RECORDS AS BASEBALL CAPTURES ECAC BASEBALL TITLE; WALSH NAMED MVP

WATERBURY, CT- Seniors Chris Irwin (Mahopac, NY) and Scott Porter (Levittown, NY) each set a new Molloy College school record and guided the baseball team to the 2008 ECAC Baseball Title. The Lions (29-21) defeated the Eagles of Post University, 4-2 on May 16. Irwin recorded two hits during the game to surpass Michael Scarinci for the school record in career hits. Irwin finished his collegiate career with 224 career hits. In addition, he holds the school record for career RBI with 137. Porter broke the school record for career strikeouts as he notched two during the game. Porter, who also holds the career record for saves, took the record from Dennis Conroy and finished his career with 143 strikeouts.
The Lions struck first in the top of the second inning, as junior Patrick Miles (North Massapequa, NY) singled to left knocking in Irwin. In the fourth, senior Andrew Scavuzzo (Kings Park, NY) recorded an RBI and gave Molloy the 2-0 advantage. The Eagles (25-25) got on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning but Molloy tacked on one run in the top of the eighth inning to stay ahead, 3-1. Post made it a one run game (3-2) when they crossed the plate in the bottom of the inning. However, the Lions defense held strong and kept the Eagles off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game. Junior Peter Loeb (College Point, NY) sealed the 4-2 victory for Molloy when he drove in junior Patrick Walsh (Bellmore, NY) during the ninth.
Walsh was selected as the MVP as he tallied five hits, four RBI and two runs scored during the two games played. Irwin finished the day with two hits and two runs scored, while Miles had two hits and an RBI. Junior Brian Powers (Westbury, NY) earned the win on the mound as he allowed five hits, no runs, one walk and six strikeouts. Porter picked up his ninth save of the season as he gave up one hit, one run, three walks and struck out two batters.
