BASEBALL SPLITS WITH C.W. POST ON SENIOR DAY
ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY- The Molloy College baseball team split an East Coast Conference doubleheader with the Pioneers of C.W. Post on Saturday, May 3. The Lions are now 27-19 overall and 15-11 in the league, while C.W. Post is 25-24 and 15-11.
C.W. Post recorded the first run of game one during the second inning. The Pioneers extended their lead to two (2-0) when they notched a run in the fourth inning. The Lions took a run back in the bottom of the inning when senior Andrew Scavuzzo (Kings Park, NY) doubled to left field and senior Chris Irwin (Mahopac, NY) came around from first base to score. The Pioneers added another run to their total in the sixth inning and took a 3-1 advantage. A sacrifice fly by junior Peter Loeb (College Point, NY) in the bottom of the inning cut the Lions deficit to one (3-2) but Molloy would be unable to cross the plate again as they took the 3-2 ECC loss. Senior Steven DeJesus (Dominican Republic) took the loss on the mound as he threw five and a third innings with nine hits, three runs and five walks.
Molloy scored first in game two as sophomore Joseph Menendez (Manhattan, NY) knocked in two runs in the second inning. The Pioneers made it a one run game (2-1) in the top of the fourth. However, in the bottom of the inning freshman Robert LaRusso (Bayside, NY) brought in Scavuzzo and junior Patrick Walsh (Bellmore, NY) drove in two runs. Walsh crossed the plate off an error by C.W. Post's catcher and extended the Lions lead to five (6-1). C.W. Post would post one more run in the seventh but that is all that Molloy would allow as they took the 6-2 victory. Senior Tim Byrne (North Massapequa, NY) picked up the win on the mound for the Lions as he pitched a complete game with four hits, two runs, one walk and two strikeouts.
The Lions and Pioneers will finish their three game ECC series on Sunday, May 4 at C.W. Post. The game is slated to begin at 1:00 PM.
